What About Cush Drive To Replace Compensator???
« on: March 29, 2014, 11:38:21 AM »

Sorry, this should have been posted in the Drive Line forum.  Please move for me.  Thanks.

I think I saw that years ago Harley had something like this on one of their belt primary drives.

I see rubber being used in drive lines, like the BMW car drive shaft.  Rubber has to be solid enough for some pretty tough drive applications.

I'm thinking about using one or even two of these spaced on top of each other as a drive coupling from a Harley V-twin to the input of a Mazda 5-spd trans in a "down the road" project.

So I'm wondering why something like the lug drives in the rear wheel of our great Harleys couldn't be used in the primary with some good results.

Just thought I'd throw this into the ring for some thoughts.

Darkhorse Crankworks has a cushion unit under development. They announced the concept at the annual V Twin show year before last. It's still in testing last I heard from John.

Added: Here's a photo that was taken at the event.

I like that a lot.

Sandwich that between two plates to keep the pucks in and lubricate at the same time.

I don't see these lasting long. And when they fail they will get chewed up in the primary.
The Idea of a urethane bonded to metal is not going to last in an oil environment with heating and cooling cycles. They would have to have a plate on both sides to prevent them from coming out of place.

They are enclosed on both sides, no bonding of the cushion to the metal.

Darkhorse has been reluctant to release that thing until they know it will hold up.....waiting on one myself.

I was going to call them this week and ask about it.

I still feel something of this type of coupling will ultimately fix our compensator issues.

There is no doubt in my mind that it will take an Independent source to solve the problem for good.  The history of the Moco has proven that it likes to sell their items so they will last just long enough for the next improvement to surface and on & on.  If the Moco does have a permanent solution imagine the profits lost by all the new levels of compensators ready to be sold to us.  That is my number one reason why I refuse to purchase a new Harley, tired of being a Beta tester.  If you like pack on the mileage or ride hard chances are you will pay & pay.  Seriously, this should have been solved a long time ago.
