Stator gone at 27k miles
« on: April 04, 2014, 08:58:47 PM »

Dropped the bike off at the dealer on Monday for a CEL and battery light. They called today and informed me the stator is bad. Told them to get the ESP thing going (my first time using it) and let me know when it's done.

Anyone else have one go that quick? I had though my battery had just died over the winter (always on a tender in the garage if not being ridden more than 3 days in a row) so I had bought a new Deka from Batterymart. Still had the lights after the new battery went in.

Got the call from the dealer. $50 for me and $554 for the ESP company to fix it. That's 1/3 of what I paid for the plan and I have another 3 years left on it. I'm thinking I'll break even on that deal or better and never have to get my hands dirty.

Better double check all nuts and bolts when you get it back from the dealer. Remember the faster the tech's get a job done
the more money they make.

When we were in MV and Bubba got a new rear tire at Asheville the belt had a lot of play in it. It was not tight at all and
Bubba didn't see it till we got home. Put a new rear tire on and not even check belt tension is doing a very poor job IMO.

Bottom line is most tech's just don't care unless they are working on there own bike.

I'll be pulling that primary back off this weekend or next anyway to put my Hayden tensioner and Clutch Wiz in it. I also had the tune straightened out while it was there. Would hope that the dyno runs after fixing the stator would have rattled anything loose if there was anything to be concerned with.

Would have never thought to check the belt tension after leaving the dealer that day. Who'd a thunkit? My cheap ass takes the wheels off and carries them to the dealer for install of new tires. Saves me 1/2 labor and can normally get in and out faster. I do remember Bubba saying he thought the tire was in better shape than what it was before you guys came to MV last year.

It does have that distintive odor to it. I can't imagine what the problem is since they did a better job of sealing the wires through the case in 09.

Mine went bad coming home from MV 2 years ago. About 320 miles from home and already 6pm.

the one that I just replaced just failed..... Drag spec. box says its a 38 amp but then in the nomenclature says 45 / 65. Still not sure I have the right amperage stator.

My '01 went through four stators in 72k miles. Always went out on a long trip, usually in a National Park.

My 00 went through one almost every year until they installed the "heavy duty" one in AZ. I was able to limp to the dealer that time, but mostly stranded out in the tullies the other times. I was told the wire seal from the regulator through the case was bad and that was changed in 09 to fix the problem. Another time the dealer told me that spilling oil when changing the filter caused it. I'm thinkin its all b.s. cause it lives in a "oil rich environment" anyway. What say you  :nixweiss:

mine went out at 39,000 miles.  about a $500+ including parts/labor.  I had the HD extended plan $50...but it was not the stator that went bad the stator rubber grommet failed and the bike leaked oil when the engine was running....so go figure....but it was kicking the oil all underneath the engine/frame....very dangerous

Doesn't pass the sniff test Lou.  Only times I've ever seen them fail with that much regularity there was something else going on also.

...but new bikes too ?  I wish there was a common denominator here like the voltage regulator, bad grounding, something, anything. I end up looking at my volt gauge more than any other instrument when riding and have almost run out of gas a couple of times doing it especially as the miles get longer from my home based motorcycle trailer. I flew home one trip and immediately drove back over 22 hours straight to finish the trip in the truck while leaving the bike and trailer in a members barn to be picked up later.
