Fuel tank filler neck removal
« on: April 06, 2014, 01:39:55 PM »

Damaged my tank last year and finally getting around to replacing it. Its the tank and side badges only ($1900!!! OUCH!!!). So will need to remove filler neck and gas outlet. Any help would be appreciated!! And yes I know I need to purchase a service manual but that does not help me today....Grandpa

The gas outlet i assume is the fitting under tank. Its a quick release like an air hose. dont lose rubber o ring inside

All I can offer is the attached drawing (click to enlarge).  Once the console is removed from the tank you will find the highlighted retaining ring,  If you don't have the official tool, and most people wouldn't, you can carefully tap the ears with a small hammer and flat punch/screwdriver, whatever you have to loosen the ring.

The check valve assembly and fuel tube screws into the bung on the bottom of the tank.  There is a hex above the chrome sleeve.

Thanks Jerry, that definitely gives me a better idea of what I'm dealing with! Should be an interesting little project.

This is the tool you need:

I just bought mine a few weeks ago.  Between my own bike and a bunch of buddies that have newer touring bikes, it's going to pay for itself pretty quickly.

Thanks redbeard, thats cheaper than ive seen anywhere. Also read on another forum a guy got a piece of pvc tubing and notched it out. Said worked great. Havent had a chance to start the tank swap yet but hoping its not too difficult. Looks pretty easy but until I get in there.............

Yeah, I've seen the same things that people have improvised.  When it comes to being that close to a painted surfaces, I'd just prefer to have the proper tool.  And for about $30 with shipping, it's cheap enough.

Btw, the one I posted is the same supplier for Snap-On, and others, from what I'm told.  It's a beefy tool, and for the at home DIY'er, it's plenty sufficient.
