Which 3.875" Pistons ?
« on: April 21, 2014, 08:29:20 PM »

What pistons are better for a moderate  TC 95" build, CP M5017 9.5:1 with 4.6cc dome or the J&E 222089 9.3:1 compression no dome info.
This is for my sons 100" Fatso ( EVO botton with TC top end) motor cam will be either a EVO cam DM530 or a Powerhouse 530G. Mainly the question is what piston give longer life. Pros / Cons? Anyone?
Thanks

If your going to be good about allowing the bike to warm up a forged piston is great but if you fire it up wait 15 seconds and take off not so good. A cast piston these days works well for most and a compression ratio around 10:1 get's you a good balance of power and heat.

The dome volume of a piston, would be dictated by the known chamber volume, head gasket thickness, and intake closing number of the chosen cam.

What flat top pistons? S.E. cast flat top or K.B. Hypereutectic flat top piston? What piston is stronger?Longer life? Pros/Cons?  I mistakenly placed this question in an other thread.
Cast has closer fit. Expands less. Last longer. Quite.
Forged loose fit. Expands alot. Shorter life. Noisy.
Hypereutectic????

A forged piston is the strongest. :2vrolijk_21:

There is one that meets all criteria and costs less than the cast pistons, a KB forged 4032 alloy piston.

Correctly fitted and for intended use that piston works very well.   :2vrolijk_21: I should add and installed correctly..

If Forged is the way you decide to go the CP would be my top choice.

Goes without saying!
They all require that. I use sucessfully most of the majors including SE, CP, KB.
The KB forged if they have your size and cr can be had for $200 a pair

Don you know as well as I do that there are some who think that the piston is of poor quality and is nothing but problems. Look at the older post where the guy forgot to install the oil ring rail.  Nothing wrong with that piston at all but if you read the piston they must be the devil..  :nixweiss:

We are in agreement but a kb904c, for example 95", does not use support rails, shortened metric ring pack allows elimination of that.

..............and a KB cast piston will not withstand an uncontrolled spark event for very long...... :2vrolijk_21:

ide just use 22851-99A SE pistons, for the build & compression your looking at,theres no need to go forged

Nothing wrong with those. Check the piston to valve clearance

And on a mild set up, I do agree with both Don, and Kirby about the HD pistons.
