These are aluminum.  So, options are polished w/clear coat, powder coat paint, or high-gloss enamel paint w/clear.  The Drag Specialties inserts for the pre-2014 bags are either polished or black powder-coated.

If they are aluminum, anodize them in different colors and then machine.  RSD billet look.   $30.00 would be the right price.

Yeah, I wanted to do black anodizing before machining them, but there is a curved that needs to be formed into them after machining and it was thought that this would mess up the anodized finish.

I would love to get the cost down to $30 per set, but that is not even a remote possibility with the fact that there is a left and right to each set, the blank is a trapezoidal shape that has to cut from a sheet of material, and there is a curved formed into the part.  In other words, they will always be more expensive than the ones like the Drag Specialty parts where there is no left and right, they are cut from stock strips of material, and they are flat.

I can have them 3D printed out of ABS plastic for about $40 a pair my cost.

Great idea though!

Thanks for the enlightenment guys!  Aluminum can be chromed after all.  My machinist thinks he can polish the aluminum and clear coat to make them look as good as chrome.  He also suggests painting the inside of the design some contrasting color before polishing and clear coating.

Good question!

Here is where I am at on this project:  I should be getting volume pricing (25, 50, 100 pieces) today (04/25/14).  The current plan is paint the inside of the machined-in design black, polish the outer face to high gloss, and clear coat the whole thing to prevent oxidation.  The only thing left is figuring out the adhesive.  If I can get a sheet of something equivalent to what Harley uses, my machinist can die cut the double back adhesive tape, making them peel-n-stick for the end-user.

I am also trying to work with Sioux Plating in Sioux City, Iowa to see how expensive and how much better, if any, chroming the aluminum would be.

Another question mark is the design.  Obviously, the "CVO" with the lines shown in the picture are locked and loaded into the water-jetter and CNC mill.  So, those could be cranked out in any quantity.  I just doubted that anyone would like something so specific, except for my friends at CVOHarely.com. :)  I have a couple of graphic artists working on one additional design that would appeal to the masses.  Something with a skull, flames, wings, etc., but these guys are not getting back to me in a very timely fashion.

Would you be interested in a set now of the CVO design?

I'm in for a set. Polished or chrome or Harley blue. If you need to roll them out, CVO is fine. SERK would be better. Put me on your list.

I know you are designing for 2014 and beyond but I would be interested in a set designed for pre '14 scooters as Ginger would look good with these attached.  I'm not that impressed with what anybody has so far purposed for our bikes in the reflector area on the bags.  That's the main reason I haven't changed it yet.

You might look at getting pre-polished material. You can buy it that way and my bet would be it will save you some cost in the long run. This way after machining all they have to do is touch it up on the polishing worst case. The material will have a film cover over the polished surface that can be machined right through and it protects the rest of the surface. If they are careful in machining you can leave the covering on when doing the paint work as well. Then peal the covering off for clear coat.

Excellent point!

We (the machinist and I) were looking at covering the raw aluminum with vinyl for painting purposes and machining through the vinyl.  I didn't know you could purchase pre-polished aluminum with a protective covering.  Thank You!

The material will come with either a translucent blue vinyl cover or a white vinyl cover on it. Saves lots of polishing work and since it was already polished as long as the machinist doesn't tear it up, it becomes a mask for the paint. The finish will be the same look as a polished AL wheel. If you go chrome it still has to be polished first if you want it to look any good anyways. So starting with the proper material works for both types.

My machinist says he has used the pre-polished aluminum sheeting before with the protective coating and he has had issues with the protective layer coming off during water-jetting.  He agrees with you though, it would probably save some polishing time later, even though he might have to reapply a vinyl sticker before machining.  Thanks

As a fan of the Screamin Eagle graphics on the RG fairing, I was wondering if the graphic below is possible.

Wow, I am not sure how you did that to my picture, but I really like the concept!  The only real restriction is that the milling tool is round and only goes down to 1 mm diameter or 0.5 mm radius.  Then I would have to get any graphic in *.sec *.drw *.igs *.iges *.dxf *.dwg *.ai file formats.

These inserts take up a tremendous amount of time to setup and I really only wanted to do one more pair (left and right) that appealed to the masses.  Do you feel the Screamin' Eagle graphic is too much of a niche market?  Kind of like my prototype "CVO" design?
