running stock head pipes w/ performance slip on
« on: April 23, 2014, 05:39:13 PM »

Does anyone here have any experience using aftermarket slip on mufflers while keeping the stock head pipe w/cat?  I hate the stock sound but my wife is coming down hard on me for spending money.  So was wondering if I just ran new mufflers and kept the stock head pipe for a while if my sound will improve (sound like a harley).  Thanks for any insight.

You will be fine running mufflers with a stock head pipe. On my bike( a 2013 Road glide) I ran the stock exhaust with a set of Fullsac baffles in the stock mufflers for the first year. It is probably the best way to keep the wife happy as the baffles and screens are around $200. I changed mine out myself, they are pretty easy to do depending on what bike you have. The dressers you can do yourself but I think the Softails you have to send in to him.

Thanks for the reply bud.  Yeah I got a 14 RK and was looking at the fullsac 2.5 cores.  So you think buying the screens is a good idea as well?  Did you notice a big difference in performance or sound when you finally put the DX head pipe on?

I would definitely use the screens, they help hold the packing to the outside of the muffler to give it more volume and a deeper sound. Once I was able to do the head pipe and tuner it definitely ran a lot cooler and better. It will lift the front tire a little by cracking the throttle from about 5 mph! Steve will give you a 10% discount for being a member here and is great to deal with. If you do a search on here there are many members who have posted tutorials on the install of the baffles. Also many on you tube such as this. I used the 2 inch cores and they had a nice rumble and got a little louder when the head pipe was installed. There are guys that have cut the head pipe open to get the convertor material out then welded them back up. There are even some guys selling them on ebay for less than $200 if you really need to watch costs. Once you go further than just the cores you better figure in the cost of a tuner to get more fuel in there as they are lean already. Even the head pipe and tuner with the new map is a pretty straightforward install. Good luck with whatever you decide!
