2006 Coughing & Sputtering
« on: November 28, 2006, 12:08:37 PM »

My 2006 Screaming Eagle Ultra has coughing and sputtering for about 20 minutes when it is started. It is just like a carburated bike. My dealer is trying to fix it but the new downloads from HD have not worked as of today. This is a safety issue at this point and the bike is still at the deal with less than 900 miles, no projected repair at this date. It is my understanding according to the dealer that putting an EFI or Power Commander will adjust it immediatly, however; HD will not authorize it. Has anyone experienced this and what is the correct approach. I have complained to HD customer service but my bike is still on the rack.

Are they checking for intake leaks? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  What have they done to troubleshoot it so far? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

See these replies about the injectors possibly being your problem....Have your dealer check into this!

Lucky1, the 8 degrees were a cheap buy for harley, but in a lot of cases they have issues such as cold start, poor idling and there was a Harley Tech Article or an informational given to the dealers with these type of problems.   I personally have never had them in a bike so it is hearsay and if I recall there were some on this site that had posted about it and problems.

So the answer would be reliablity and avoiding possible problems.  Some Harley dealers swapped out the 8's for the 25's and issues went away, some dealers never got it figured out, and have even heard of dealers giving away a Race Tuner to solve the tunability issues for the customer.   If it were me and I had the 8 degrees *Delco* ones I would insist that the dealer switched them out.   Others just chose to buy the 25's and avoid possible issues now and later.

Lucky1,

Harry's correct - it was a driveability issue created by poor fuel atomization.  The 25

I have had my 06 since 3-30, 9200 miles.  I have had the problem ever since the first weekend.  The bike has been in the shop for this very thing at least 6 times since March.  It has been checked for intake leaks.

We took the ECM off and sent it back to HD and they reprogramed it.  Problem still there.  About two months ago, they changed out my 25 degree injectors for another set of 25 degree injectors.  Solved the problem for about 20 miles.  The bike is stock, totally.

I was in AR about a month ago and it almost got me killed, when entering traffic, it just flat died.  I brought it home and put it on the stand until last week when I took it to the dealer.  They say a RT will fix it.  But after spending the money I did to buy the thing, I do not intend to spend $1500 more to make it run right.

When  I took it to the dealer, I told to fix it, or buy it back from me.  I finally called Harley.  The lady I was speaking with did not seem to interested until I told the bike was totally stock.  That seemed to get her attention.  She said she would pull the records, call the dealer and get back to me.  That was week ago today and guees what, no call.  I went by the dealer today and they have not touched the bike.  They faxed all the records to Harley and are waiting to hear back.

Will let you what happens.

Just a quick update.  Two weeks and counting.  HD has not called me back.  No real surprise.  As a matter of fact, no one from the dealer has called me back.

Went by the dealer today to what might be going on, nothing.  Mechanic that supposedly has been working on it was off.  Talked to a service writer, and he said they had done another download.  I started it.  Let it idle a minute or two and blipped the throttle ever so gently.  Guess what, it coughed.  The guy said it was cold, 60 degrees outside, 75 degrees where it was sitting.  I told it didn't really matter as it is a FI bike.  None of my other FI bikes cough and sputter when cold.

Thje service writer is a former HD mechanic at another dealer and he said he didn't understand why they will not put a SERT on it.  He said the dealer he formerly worked at, got a RT installed on an 06.

By the way, this is for an 06 UCSE.  When I saw the orginal "Coughing and Sputtering" I did not realize this was under SEEG thread.  Move my comments if you feel it is neccessay.

Will keep you posted.

I had a similar problem with my 04. Turned out to be the temp sensor. Mine was so bad it began to start fouling the plugs. This might be worth looking into something tells me I heard that HD had a bad batch of these.

Got the call today about 12:30.  Harley decided to put a race tuner in it, no charge to me.  Picked it up about 4:30.  Started and idled totally different.  It was raining when I picked it up so only riding I did was around the block to put it in the garage.  Seemed to run tons better.  Probably should spend some time on the dyno to really make it run right.  Probably will not have it long enough to find out.

Put money down Saturday on a 07 Red Jester.  Due in April.  Gonna sell the 06.  This afternoon got a line on a Red one that might be available by the weekend.  Might have one sooner than I expected.

Alls well that ends well.  At least this time the MOCO did what I thought was right.

Amazing, and they tried to deny my warranty because I had a SERT installed.

AT least the bike is fixed.

The 06 is history.  The deal on the 07 UCSE worked and I now have it.  Got it last night.  Rode a little this afternoon.  Already can tell, this bike stock, is better than the 06 stock.

Ride safe.
