High Idle problem
« on: April 25, 2014, 08:51:53 AM »

In early Feb I had S&S premium lifters installed in my '07.  After riding about 100 miles after the installation I experienced an idle problem.  Don't think or see how it could be related to the lifter install and think it is just coincidental but this was the first time it happened.

Stopped for a photo and upon restart the engine immediately died.  Did so two more times.  The third time it ran but idle was high - about 1500-1800 rpm.  Rode on for 15-20 miles and engine ran fine - good power, no misfire, nothing out of the ordinary.  But the high idle persisted every time I came to a stop.  When I stopped for fuel for whatever reason I decided to pull the maxi fuse and that cured the high idle.

Now about 800 miles later it happened again yesterday.  Same scenario and pulling the maxi fuse did correct it.

Can't understand what may be causing this or why pulling the maxi fuse and 'resetting' everything??? would correct this.  Any ideas?   :nixweiss:

ADDED:  Forgot to state - no DTCs (of course).  Wondering if a 'flaky' sensor could be sending wrong info to ECM creating this issue.  If so I would think this would generate a DTC, or not?

Intake leak would be first step. If that is fine then on to the next step

A 2007 still has a IAC stepper motor. Pull the a/c and clean the idle air passage. If that is clean the problem comes back , replace the stepper motor.  I think I have a few here from older units If you want get in touch with me I can mail you one and swap it see if it corrects the issue. Will save you from buying the part. Some times the intermittent items are the worst to track down..

If you can get your hands on a SET or SEST or TTS module you can go into data mode and watch the stepper motor and see what it is doing. That would be helpful.   When you pull the maxi fuse the stepper motor is being reset and being that fixes the issue that would be a good place to start looking.

They had some issues with inj wires breaking but you stated no running issues..

Thanks for the generous offer. Jerry let me know how this works for yours. I will try same if it fixes your problem. Mine is not that bad however usually once something starts it progressively gets worse over time.

Thanks for generous offer. Will pm you later. Dealer checked everything after first incident especially for intake leak and found none. I do have TTS but insure how to check as you suggested.

I have never had this problem but if pulling the fuse fixes the problem I would guess it is electrcial and you are resetting something. Lots of sensors and electronics.  If you could get to the dealer when it is happening I would think they can put diagnostic equipment on it and figure out what the issue is.

Sounds like the IAC. take off the air cleaner and look for a hole in the upper front section of the intake. spray with choke cleaner. Mine did the same thing and once the gunk was cleaned out the problem disappeared. There are many threads on this issue.

Part is on its way to you. Hope that corrects the issue. Not a high failure rate on the IAC but just a stepper motor and its getting off count.

You can only see what the ECM commanded the stepper motor to do - not what it did.  That is why one of the quickest tests is visually watching the pintle of the motor when powering on and off - it should move in and out and park.

If the bike cannot control idle in approximately a minute within a certain RPM, it should throw a loss of idle code.

Terry,

On yours you could very well be the same issue, and it needs to be ruled out.  If you rule out the iac motor and cleaning it, and checking for intake leaks, another thing you might look at on these  bigger throttle bodies like the one on your 131 is where your idle is set via the iac.   It should be somewhere between 30 and 37 at idle.  If its not you could be fighting an additional battle, I have had a few issues with the HPI ones not being where they should be.  Its the little allen head screw on the bottom right of the throttle body it controls the blade (butterfly) on the throttle body.

Open up the TTS Data Gather tool

Start the tool when the dongle is connected to the bike and run the tool it will show where the IAC is set to.
