Insurance Premium Doubled!!!
« on: April 25, 2014, 02:40:25 PM »

I have my bikes insured thru AARP by Foremost Insurance Group.  It's time to renew coverage so when I opened the renewal envelope I discovered that the Collision premium for the '00 SERG had more that DOUBLED!!  Of course I called to see if there was a mistake because premiums for my other bikes rose only a dollar or two.  According to the nice lady on the phone Foremost underwriting has "broadened classification codes and thus changed how the SE bikes are rated".  This change affects only SE models.  She couldn't explain why or what gave rise to this 'change'.  Anyone else out there have a similar experience with Foremost?
Footnote:  My driving record looks like a nun's & I've never filed a claim.

I had Foremost for several years and they were the lowest cost provider in this area at the time.  Prior to that I had Progressive and they were the lowest cost provider at that time.  Now I have GEICO and they are the lowest cost provider for this area at this time.  They all adjust their rate structures after tracking their costs and claim history in your particular state, not necessarily every year but eventually they all do it.  It is a very good idea to get quotes from all the major insurers in your state every year;  the company that was the best for the past three years might be the highest cost provider this year.

As for Foremost, I had them for several years and thought they were great.  Then they and AARP got together and offered a discount so I signed up through the AARP side and saved $50 or so.  The following year my premium went back to the same rate they were charging folks who didn't have the AARP discount.  When I questioned it, they admitted the discount was a one year only thing and the rates went back to normal on the next renewal.  In other words, the AARP discount wasn't worth the time it took to cancel the regular policy and then buy the same policy through the AARP side.  BTW, I found that was the same way most AARP supposed discounts were really handled.  They claimed to provide a lot of benefits and discounts, but actual comparisons on things like hotels and insurance showed I could do just as well on my own without an AARP card.

And then what you might tell your insurer:

Check your Department of insurance for rate surveys.  Arizona has every licensed carrier from least to most expensive for a sample policy.  Probably not a motorcycle but you'll get the idea.
They also rate the carriers by customer complaints /1000 policies issued.
Good luck.

I had almost the same thing happen.  When I traded my Heritage for my SERG my insurance went up like $50 or so.  I was going thru Progressive via USAA.  The next year's renewal doubled and I asked about it.  Their answer was that what it is.  I called Foremost and my rate dropped to what it was the before the rate increase.

I really wish USAA stilled insured motorcycles.  When they did I could get $100,000 in medical coverage.  Now it is something like $2,500.  Heck, I can't even afford to stub a toe with that coverage.

Try Markel Insurance (markelinsuresfun.com).  They specialize in insuring toys and have had competitive rates sine I started using them in '03.  Also, I had a large claim in '05 and Markel didn't bat an eye, nor did they raise my rates.

I think the trick is to get with an Insurance Compay you can trust... stick with them and question every rate hike.

I've been with State Farm since 1984.  My current Garage has a 2002 Chevy Avalanche, 2009 XL883C, 2011 FLHTCUSE6, and a 2014 Chevy Cruise... I send them $201/mo for "Full Coverage" on all four vehicles with a standard $500 deductible.

The longer you can stay with a company, the more benefits/discounts you are likely to earn.

And, while I can say I haven't had any Collision Claims since 1994... I replace one or two windshields every other year due to the road conditions here in Alaska.  Rates have actually never gone up, but seem to drop a few dollars a month every year.  I think the biggest drop was about $40 over the year before, just can't remember what year that was.   8)

I just had to go have a sit down with my State Farm Agent. All 3 of my Avalanches went up and my bike along with coverage on a rental property I have. I changed some of the coverages as I always had a whole lot anyway.  One thing  that I did have to get corrected is they were still charging my stepson coverage on his summer toy that I totaled back on Dec 1st. He's stationed in KS and just has his ins taken out of his bank account via autopay. He ended up getting a credit on his bill for the overages but I thought it was still pretty chitty of them in the first place. I've had them for almost 30 years now and every time I shop around, I can't get better rates for the coverages I like.

Rider insurance covers my 2013 CVO for $375 a year with 100/300 limits and a $500 deductible. They only do bikes and other toys so you will have to deal with two different companies to cover everything.

I've been with Dairyland for a number of years. Every year at renewal time I get quotes from other places for comparison and so far nobody has beat them for coverage/price.

X2   Sentry Insurance through Dairyland.  In my quote, half the price of Progressive or Geico.

Insurance is probable the most expensive product that people purchase without knowing what they bought.  You pay the premium and then after the fact you get a policy booklet that tells you exactly what you did or did not buy.  These booklets are full of 'gotcha' language.

If your bike is stolen, will they pay for your after market pipes and your Mustang seat?  If you disagree with your company, do you have to sue them or is it binding arbitration?  Does a given company have the reputation for forcing claimants to litigate most of their claims or do they offer fair settlements early on in a claim.

Get a sample policy and read it before you buy or have an independent agent compare and contrast policy language from the different companies.
Price is not everything and when it comes to insurance you usually get what you pay for.
