2006 Coughing & Sputtering
« on: November 28, 2006, 12:22:27 PM »

My 2006 Screaming Eagle Ultra has coughing and sputtering for about 20 minutes when it is started. It is just like a carburated bike. My dealer is trying to fix it but the new downloads from HD have not worked as of today. This is a safety issue at this point and the bike is still at the deal with less than 900 miles, no projected repair at this date. It is my understanding according to the dealer that putting an EFI or Power Commander will adjust it immediatly, however; HD will not authorize it. Has anyone experienced this and what is the correct approach. I have complained to HD customer service but my bike is still on the rack.

Sounds like a Sales PITCH to me! What is the Build date of your 06 the eailer ones (I THINK) Had an injector recall for that.
I know someone will either confirm or correct my info.

Some of the early 06's had the 8 degree injectors, which should have been 25 degree ones.  Most of the problems the 8's caused were related to cold running issues.  If the dealer hasn't already looked at them, they should.  There's a tsb or some such out on it.

I purchased a new one with ZERO miles and after 600 plus miles and 28 days in the shop HD took it back !! Tell them you want a replacement bike or your $$ back.

I agree with Fiesta, get a new bike or your $$ back.  Seems some of these things run great...others can't even make it thru break-in.  I've got over 25000 miles and she'll lift the front end like a sportbike.....oil leaks here and there, and a loose compensator nut, but so far she just keeps on runnin.  I wouldn't hesitate to jump on it and ride x-country tomorrow (except that I'd likely need another back surgery and 2 months recovery half way across).

Wow - Take that bad boy back and tell them to shove it.  Brand new and such issues does not make for a long term relationship...

Ok, I just got my bike back and after 6 days in the shop HD finally came up with a new download that seemed to fixt the problem. This was the second time the bike was in for the same problem. Both times, it was in for virtually a week. Let's hope this works finally. Now, my heated grips are out. They keep blowing the 5 amp fuse. HD customer service tells me that the grips have been discontinued on the '06. They are trying to get some new ones made but they have been on back order for a year. What next?

Had a cold runability issue with mine when it was new they had to send the ECM back to the factory to have a "C" version map loaded which fixed the problem. They wouldn't release the version of the map at the time,  that was several months ago.

My 2006 UCSE had the problem.  Primarily when you gave it partial throttle.  Worked with dealer and HD.  After nine months and almost getting killed, after it stalled in front of an oncoming car, HD put a SERT in it.  Not sure if the SERT worked, because I never rode it after I got it back.  Hope the new owner doesn't have any trouble.

Depending on when it was manufactored they used 3 different map over the course of the year.  Mine came with a B map and didn't run well cold.  They reflashed the ECM with the C map and it has been fine since.  The dealer should be able to tell you which map is loaded.

Hi electra88,
I don't know of any specific check you could do other than start it several times and maybe test ride it before you make payment.
I know it can be a scary thing to read all of the problems on this site but I am willing to bet the majority of owners have no or very few problems. It's just that most people don't post with stuff like my bike is working great and that's X amount of days in a row with no issues.
I do know that the injector issues of early 2006 bikes applied to the stock engines not the Screamin Eagle bikes. I know I went through this with my dealer when I got my Arlen Ness Big Sucker,S&S SPOs and the Stage 1 race download. I wanted to be sure I had the new injectors so I had the dealer check during the download and we also read the MOCO injector notice together and it says in the fine print that that the cold start problem was in the old  stock injectors and the recommended fix was to get the new injectors that came standard on the Screamin Eagle engines.
I have had no problems from day one with cold starts and since my mods I have not had any either. I do not have a SERT or PC just the Stage 1 race download.

My haze was built in April 06 and has not had the problem. It was cured by a recall and the suggestion to start it and run it before you buy it should put you at ease.

It was a problem that present (meaning) it would happen all the time every time.
