Have the crankshafts been upgraded between 07 and 14?
« on: April 28, 2014, 12:05:30 PM »

I have been told conflicting information: Have the twin can crankshafts been upgraded between 07 and 14? Or are they unchanged? I realize they are not the best.

Thank you

Axil just got back from a class in Milwaukee last week. They had a long discussion on the pressed HD crank assemblies. He did tell me but I will let him chime in so I don't get anything wrong.

The Crank in the'09 SERG has been "upgraded" 2x in 21k.
We'll see how long the (latest) S&S "upgrade" lasts?

Compared to what was seen with the 07s the cranks couldn't have gotten worse without being made of papery products and glue.   07 is a poor baseline to measure improvement from though.  Don't confuse better with good.  Especially when the current runout spec is what it is.

MoCo can make incremental or even significant changes all it wants Jerry.  Until I see the runout spec come back down to something legitimate I'll not trust that even Harley believes the cranks are all that good.

It really wouldn't cost the MOCO much more at all to build that bottom end right to start with.  There bean counters are only building them to last 2 yrs for the average rider, what's that, about 8000 miles.  It makes the S&S 124 look very attractive.

All I know is when I bought my 07 I bought all the manuals with it and max runout says 3thou
in my manual and then as we got on in the year the MOCO decided 12thou is the new 3thou.  :o Who does that? Well I know the answer but as the young kids say REALLY……?

Spot-on with that '07 info!! :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:
Worst of the 4 3/8"ers from what we've seen, and while we are on the subject, the 2004, 4" stroke cranks, were by far the ALL TIME ABSOLUTE WORST.
Seen those with as much as .042" on the pinion side, and .016" on the sprocket side, actually running on 2 seperate centerlines.

Easy question to answer:  $  They also eliminated the bushings from the cam plates around the same time.

That is the number one reason I will not purchase a new HD.  There is just such a huge difference in .003 and .012.  Just on this forum alone there is a huge number that had to have work done to their flywheels.  It's like having to put in a new septic tank when you are selling your house.  The money could have gone to other improvements that are visual, performance or comfort related.   Instead the money goes where it doesn't show or increase the value.  Enough to make me take my money elsewhere.  Harley is not alone in cutting corners it's just this one is so very costly to repair vs. doing it right the first time.

The moco crank problem really irritates me as I read the posts from owners and mechanics that have to deal with the poor quality that the moco assumes that we will live with. Taking this a little further, lifter and cam chest issues rank right with the crank issue that the moco still considers acceptable to owners of their bikes.

How does the moco get by with this second class quality of their products? I do not feel any of us would allow an American car company to make such an inferior motor part for our cars and pick ups. When I read the post from Scott @ Hillside about the run out on the cranks, it encouraged me to post this. I do not normally do a lot of posting, but this continuing crank issue on $20,000 - $35,000 motorcycles is ridiculous!

I have a friend that has had four Victory motorcycles since 2000 with no issues, he keeps telling me that some day I will see the light, now I have to wonder.
