Possible problem! Long list of things I must avoid even being close to now that I have a Pacer. Large generators, electric motors, arc welders, radio transmitters, high-voltage power lines, magnetic therapy products. Maintaining or repairing any electrical or gasoline powered appliances. Leaning over the open hood of a running car. Even my cell phone they recommend using the ear farthest from my Pacer.

Besides a faradays cage (like the body of the car) there is no fix to this.

Any voltage is being "induced" thru induction - same way a transformer works.  The more CURRENT is flowing thru the line, the more VOLTAGE can be induced when riding thru the moving field.  The field around the wires is a function of the POWER (Current X Voltage) that is passing thru the line.  This is how we get a 10,000 volt spark to our spark plugs using only a 12 volt system.  No insulation or grounding will fix this problem.  Only shielding or modifying the power thru the line.  Grounding the handlebars would help, but you would need a long wire  ::)

It is an electromagnetic field that is produced by the voltage in the lines that accumulates in the body, much like a capacitor. It sounds like the engineers routed the lines too close together for it to produce such a strong field.

◾When a person who is isolated from ground by some insulating material comes in close proximity to an overhead transmission line, an electrostatic field is set in the body of human being, having a resistance of about 2000 ohms.
◾When the same person touches a grounded object, it will discharge through his body causing a large amount of discharge current to flow through the body. Discharge currents from 50-60 Hz electromagnetic fields are weaker than natural currents in the body, such as those from the electrical activity of the brain and heart.

I know you said it happens at power lines. I was getting the piss knocked out of me when I touched the clutch lever or front brake lever and the grips at the same time. Try riding a 950# bike with that happening. Ended up being the heated grips. Wire feeding them had a skint place on the insulation inside the handle bars.  :nervous:

red ben59, I had a report of the same thing on a 2011 SERK with heated grips. In that case they changed out the grips and the problem was fixed. I don't have heated grips, but still leaves me wondering if some of the wiring isn't right and contributing to the problem.

Waaaay back a long time ago, (in the 40's-50's),  I seem to recall that gas trucks and such would have a chain mounted to the axle or frame and it drug along the road.....I assume to act as a ground of sorts.

Maybe you could wrap a small chain around your leg and let the other end hang down and drag the ground.......See how that works. :cherry:

I remember that to Scooter. It was there to discharge the static charge. Must have been a bunch of hooey cause they no longer do it.

Hey Lowflight,
Not sure if anybody suggested this but, how about taking a test ride on a new 2014 or rent some other bike. That would let you know if it is you or your bike that is the problem. If it is you then there may be something to the power lines not being installed. If it is your bike then the moco should be responsible. Either way if it was me I would be pissed. Hell I'm pissed and it ain't even me.

My wife rides with me on her bike 95% of the time and she has never had this problem, but that bike has rubber hand grips. Mine are the slipstream so there is exposed metal and if I make sure I only grip that rubber part it isn't an issue. Sure is strange!
I recall those grounding chains as well and I don't foresee myself putting chains on my boots, but it would make for some interesting night riding.

I have undertaken several trips to the States, last year rode over 5000 miles , Denver, Sturgis, Yellowstone, Rockies,  Niagara Falls. Milwaukee and Chicago.
On two of our trips we have travelled from Williams to the Grand Canyon ( 2007 and 2013), I remarked to my wife on both occasions that I felt a slight electrical shock while passing under the power lines. These lines cross over the road to the canyon. I was wearing short gloves and therefore my skin was in contact with the levers.
Plan to be back next year for another great road trip.
Cheers from sunny South Africa.
