Harley Factory Chrome vs Aftermarket Chrome Platers
« on: May 08, 2014, 10:30:36 AM »

I have Polished my son's TC rocker boxes pretty nice but theywill not stay that way without a lot of effort on a lazy son.
I see on ebay Harley Chrome Rocker Boxes average sale 170 bucks. foor the same price I can get several different platers to tripple plate them. Browns was twice the price of the majority of the platers. I know Browns is supposed to be the best.
What should a Dad do? Besides tell your son pay for it yourself, but I still love him and Harley's too!

The parts that I have had plated locally have held up very well, Harley plating not so much.

My first Harley I drank the "Harley Chrome Is The Best Kool-Aid"... However after going thru a peeling chrome issue and reading of others dealing with peeling/pitted chrome I would go after market chrome parts or have parts chrome plated versus buying MoCo chrome.

Rather than replacing hd parts with new,, get the pitted stuff rechromed. I did that on my 04 Seeg front wheel and rear brake pedal. Never looked back. Stuart.

Browns (Paduca, KY) was chroming rocker boxes long before the MoCo.

There was a time (past) the MoCo chrome was as good as any, not so much any more...

I had mine powder coated instead of chroming them.
Less maintenance than Chrome.
looks good I think.
This is the only photo I have of this bike with the powder coating being finished.

Chrome Masters in Nashville.
X4. Some of the guys on a Rune forum ship a set of stock intake manifolds to them to get plated and there hasn't been any complaints I've seen. They do a rotation kinda thing where one guy sends in a stock set(he already has a plated set from previous rotation) and once plated they go to another guy. He then pulls off his stock manifolds and repeats the process. Guessing they've done around 20 sets so far.

I bought a set already chromed from a guy and they were plated from a place in CA. Too bad one of six has chipped and I will need to replate it. Got a good quote from Chrome Masters but haven't shipped it yet since my Rune is up for sale.

I used browns on a 77 sportster I did over years ago. Their plating is very good. Harley chrome seems to have gone severely downhill. Nothing like it used to be. If I needed something replated now I would use browns, especially if I was planning on keeping it a while.
