I have been really impressed with the Custom Dynamics products.  I have four 3-LED Stingerz connected to Black Magic III controller.  The controller DID come with one bad remote (out of two), that I need to start working on getting a replacement tomorrow (Monday).  Supposedly, the remotes are guaranteed for 3 years.

The Stingerz come in all different sizes (# of LEDs) and colors.  Some even mimic the animated look of fire and have pre-mixed colors of LEDs that produce an aqua color.  The Stingerz are flexible and have tape on all three sides for ease of mounting, but they sell a decorative housing they fit into to exterior rigid mounting.  I bet the Custom Dynamics "Zone Controller" can do some pretty cool tricks too, but I specifically wanted the "breathing" pattern on the Black Magic III controller.

The possibilities are only limited by your creativity, but routing the wires robust enough that you do not have long-term failures can be a pain.  Take your time and do it right, or hire a pro.
