Average oil temperatures??
« on: May 11, 2014, 07:02:28 PM »

I searched and didn't find any information on this topic. I just picked up a dipstick temp gauge and was curious what I should be seeing for average oil temps. I spoke with Bob Woods once about the best conditions to check it, to get an accurate reading. He told me 10 minutes @ approx 55 mph, pull over and check it. We never talked about what was good, bad or dangerous.  Any input?? What is your average?? What would be considered dangerous?? I know there will be multiple answers, what is dangerous for Dino May not be for synthetic, and obviously ambient air temp will have an effect on it also. Just curious if what I am seeing compared to what other properly tuned 110's are seeing. Thanks!! :drink:

Mine runs around 220 in normal riding conditions. At 260 the fans come on on the Ultra Cool oil cooler. ( only did this while being dyno tuned ) So somewhere in between there is OK.

I use the digital dipstick that will read around 230-260 when it is cool out and up to 290 when I run hard and it is very hot out on my 120r. I actually ran about 10 degrees hotter on my 110. It did seem when I changed my digital DS about a year ago that the new (current) one ran hotter

FWIW, quite some time ago we performed testing here for Sumax, the powder coating folks, as their process involves some good heat.
They provided us with a set of test heads, heated in our oven we use for re-sleeving(and various other uses) and with use of a laser heat gun, the valve seats will start to migrate at 350-360*.

I've had temps in the 300-340 on hot days 85-95 degrees when stuck in traffic, its a real nut roaster.

What would be more accurate, the engine temp on my Power Vission or the dip stick read out. The dip stick always reads around 5 degrees more. ?

On my CVO Fxstsse springer softail normal running temp while riding is 110°c   figures.  Sitting in traffic it will rise off the scale!

Before dyno tuning normal running over 120°c, cant say how much higher cus the scale tops out at 120°c!

Your PV is reading the cylinder head temperature data as reported by the sensor in the front cylinder head, not the oil temperature.

I guess most of you are running EFI. The carb TC run alot cooler. I thought the modules could tune for a 12.5 to  13 air fuel ratios. The motors run alot cooler not being so lean. TC heads have a generous amount of cooling fins. There are sensors that have different reisitances to change the ratios.

FWIW, none of these numbers mean anything.  We are using oil temp readouts that are uncalibrated.  I'd not be surprised to see a 20 degree difference between 2 different ones.  As far as "safe" temps, oil needs to get above the boiling temp of water, 212F, to burn off contaminants and condensation, so I get quite a kick out of people saying their normal temps are below 200.  Conventional oil starts to break down at 300F, so there's one limit.  Synthetics will generally run 10-15F cooler, as well.  BTW, I know the last because I used a calibrated thermocouple to check my oil temps at one time, before going to synthetics.  This was on a '99, that ran a lot cooler than today's bikes, and my oil temp was still getting close to 300F on a hot day.

Now, here's my suggestion.  Note your oil temp with your dip stick.  Now forget about it unless the oil temp varies A LOT from what it is under normal circumstances.

Thanks for all the good info!!! I wasn't looking for a gospel temperature, more for an idea of what I should be seeing compared to others and what temp was dangerous. Sunday I road a couple hundred miles, ambient temperature was 68f, and after a 30 mile run at approx 60mph, temp was 239f. I guess I should be ok!! Thanks again!!

Looks like you've had some motor work done, bike is breathing better, will run cooler. If you had the bike dyno tuned that will help as well. I have a 95" motor in my Heritage Springer with motor work which has been dyno tuned, the bike will run around 220 degrees on average even on the hot summer days.
