Canned map good enough?
« on: May 12, 2014, 12:53:52 PM »

I generally get 40-42 mpg and my bike runs great with the canned map I downloaded when I put the TTS master tune on my USE3.
My question is whether to have it dyno tuned or not?
Obviously with an experienced tuner.
Any thoughts?

If  you did your home work before uploading the canned man, why waste money on a Dyno run!
You are unlikely to notice any (seat of your pants) difference if you did your homework correct.

Have you tried optimizing your tune by using the Datamaster and Vtune features of the TTS system?

What the h, run the V tune on the road a few times and get it tuned in even better.  It's not hard and an interesting experience.

:nixweiss: Lower run is a canned map, higher run is dyno tuned. Not hard to decide which is better.

Pretty hard to argue with that...

I had a canned map in mine when I bought it. Heat was terrible. Retuned and picked up 5hp and 6 tq along with less heat and decel popping. Not too worried about gas mileage. My truck gets 15 on a good day.

I guess you could ask yourself this question.  Is paying another 400 or so dollars for a single dyno tune worth the 12 hp and 10 pounds of torque?  With most EFI's now available we have the opportunity to "autotune" and get better results than just a canned tune anyway.

If you have a known competent tuner in your area, you will benefit from a quality dyno tune.  Hard to say if you'd gain much power, but you'd likely have a more efficient running bike.  Better mileage, better temps, cleaner running motor.  With the right guy doing the tune, it's worth it.   :2vrolijk_21:

I can only speak for the product that we sell and invented. If your willing to put in the time and you have an exhaust system that does not have screwed up O2 installation there is nothing a pro tuner can do that you cannot do in the closed loop range. Where the Pro is going to help is to get it done quicker and the WOT areas. I am all for a Pro tuner if you have one that you can use but speaking only again for our product, it all up to you. It takes time an effort on your part as any tuner tool, including ours is just a tool. The more tools you have to use the better tune you can get but the double edge sward is that it can also be harder to use if you do not understand it all.

I have the gutted stock exhaust system with Fullsac 1 3/4" baffles.  Is there anything wrong with the stock 02 installation?
I am not looking for WOT, 'cause my bike has never seen red line.  I'm just a touring guy.  I seldom shift past 4K.  I don't want to waste money for 1 or 2 hp.
Like I said, I'm happy with my milage, and my bike seems to run like a top.  -Sounds like I should probably leave it alone.

Steve G, I also have the fulsac stage one canned map, open air cleaner, non cat header, and 1.75 baffles. I did notice a significant seat of pants improvement with no dyno tuning, no pinging even in over 100 degree weather. I say leave well enough alone. I would bet there are a lot of guys that had a good running bike who decided to get a little more power and then ran into a lot of tuning issues after trying something different. I went thru this with my 95 Heritage and I decided if my 09 ran good with a stage one kit I would stick with that. Besides I rarely go over 5500RPM and I like the way the 255 cams pull from down low. I bought my TTS from Fullsac along with 2" baffles.  He then provided me with a canned dyno proven map to upload into my ECM.

At that time the '09 SERG was the hot product on the road and Fullsac had done MANY dyno tunes with hundreds of runs on them with non-CAT stock HD header pipe and he stock AC, which from the factory is a high efficiency breather to begin with.

My bike has been great with mileage in the mid to upper 40 mpg's from day one.  I'm a happy camper.

Now on my previous bike, an '08 SERK Annie, I had a PCIII and downloaded the canned map from their website and it ran okay, but had decel popping and got less than 40 mpg.  I had it dyno'd at Sturgis in '08 and it ran soooo much better afterwards.

So I think that a "canned map" can mean lots of things depending on who did the tuning to develop the canned map.  I would be very confident with anything that comes from Fullsac.

For myself I have no interest in having a dyno tune on my '09 SERG as I'm very please with the performance and mileage.
