HID Headlight Question
« on: May 13, 2014, 06:46:13 PM »

I'm getting ready to order hi and lo beam HID headlight kits and didn't know if I need the wiring harness that allows you to hook the headlights to the battery (this provides immediate power to your lights when using HIDs since they draw more power on start up).  Also, if I do need a wiring harness, should I get one for both the hi and lo beam?

Lastly, if I use 2 harnesses to hook both hi and lo beam to the battery, will that overload my battery?  I'm looking at the HIDs from DDM Tuning.

It would help to know precisely what you're getting.  I had HID's for about eight years on my Road Glides.  The older ballasts sometimes could not cope with the voltage drop on start up.  My old trick was to switch to high beams on start and the lights worked fine.   The newer ballasts did not have the problem at all.  If you're getting good ballasts with your HID's,  you shouldn't need a direct wire to the battery at all.  Got mine from Xenonlink.com.

It won't overload the battery as you'll only be using one set of ballast on start up. With that being said, I have DDM hids in all of my trucks. I get that "flicker" on start up because my trucks all have the "auto on " headlight sensors. I used the harness in two of the trucks and it did not make a difference. Lights still flicker on start up. Maybe going with a better brand or only doing the low beams and having your head light switch on high when starting as Greg suggested will cure this. I do not run high beam hids in my trucks because the low beams seem to do the trick just fine. I do have yellow hid fog lights in one of my trucks also.

It would help to know precisely what you're getting.

The pic of the HID kit is below.  It would be two 35 watts kits (one with a h8 bulb, the second with a h11 bulb). My 2010 CVO headlight works like this: low beam has one bulb illuminated, high beam illuminates both bulbs.

My guesstimate is that you do not need a wiring harness for the newer ballasts don't seem to have a problem.  Have you tried asking the manufacturer?

Yes, I called the company before posting on this site and they seem to know more about cars than bikes.  I've called twice and get the same person every time.  Thanks guys.

The problem I ran into when thinking of going with an HID kit, similar to the posted picture... was that even though there's plenty of room to mount the two ballast inside, the Harley wiring harness only supports one output (which supplies power to both stock bulbs).  So with two kits for the two bulbs, you need some kind of conversion harness to plug those two kits into one plug (power source).

If there is such a wiring harness, with my limited skills... I've yet to find one.

Something else I wanted to bring up about the DDM setup. Every one I've got the polarity has been backwards. Simple two minute ordeal to Repin the plug on my trucks.
