cooler running
« on: May 14, 2014, 12:45:02 PM »

I have a 2013 Ultra limited stock 103 all that has been done is slip-on exhaust. Will adding head pipes ,breather and a tuner help it run cooler? also can I do breather and tuner ( stock head pipes) or add after market head pipes and tuner with stock breather? trying to not spend $1000.00 plus right now.

The air cleaner won't make any difference in operating temperatures.  Removing the catalyst (changing the head pipes) will eliminate that source of heat on your right foot and leg.  Having the engine tuned can, depending on how it's tuned, lower the actual operating temperature of the engine and exhaust slightly.  So if you can only do two things right now, the air cleaner would be the one to postpone.

Are you trying to reduce the operating temperature as a way to improve the life of the engine, or are you trying to improve your comfort level.  The two aren't necessarily the same thing.  If you are mostly concerned with lowering the head temps or making them more consistent to improve reliability, you might want to look at cooling fans.

:2vrolijk_21:   From what I've heard from guys on this site, that would seem to be an excellent idea.

grtguy257, I would highly recommend you do the HD free flowing air cleaner if you are going to do the tune and loose the cat. I installed the HD air cleaner when my bike was stock just prior to installing the fulsac stage one map, 1.75 exhaust and noncat header. I can honestly tell you that I did feel a difference from stock with just the open air cleaner even though I did not ride it far before I added the new fuel map. I have attached the part numbers for the free flow air filter that I used on my 09. I hope they will work on your 103 . If you buy the parts separate you get the chrome back plate kit. If you buy the parts as a "kit" you do not. Also when you do the open air cleaner make sure the chrome( I have the football style ) cover does not wiggle back and forth. If it does ask for the correct air filter service gasket. It is a thick rubber ring that sticks to the outside edge of the K&N air filter and stops the wiggling. If you do not do this the center of the air filter will break out for sure unless they have beefed up the design since I installed mine. I made it almost 1000 miles and then it fell off when I was in the carpool lane. Fortunately I held it in place with my leg until I could get to the shoulder and saved the chrome cover. I hope this helps. CAHDBIKER

I thought this was a CVO site. Anyway, lose the cat, definitely let it breathe, get tuned and a D&D 2/1 Fat cat exhaust. I did this to my 110 Road Glide and got 105 horse and 128 torque. Ran great but I wanted to cool it down a little bit more so I put a Jag 10 row fan assisted oil cooler on and a harley 6 quart oil cooler and while I was at it decided to upgrade the cams from the 255's to the 259's. Had it re-tuned and I'm now getting 120 horse with 130 torque and the engine is so much cooler now I can't believe it. Took a road trip getting 44 mpg and around town riding hard about 35 to 36 mpg. It all cost me about 5k but well worth it. Next is a progressive or CVO rear suspension and I'll try extra fork oil first and see if this help the front end.

You're getting 120/130 from a CAM install?

Yes. Left the stock throttle body. He upgraded the spark plugs. I really think my exhaust I'd the big difference maker. Just the stock 110 with a tune and exhaust put me at 105 and that's pretty damn good from whet I read everywhere. Harley here in dallas also changed their tuning machine and my guy had to get re certified.
