My '07 FLHTC has 1,000 miles and is currently undergoing a 120" build as I write this.  Am I worried about the H-D powertrain warranty?  No.  Do I desire a dependable and durable powertrain that will offer significantly more performance?  Absolutely.  An intelligent performance build from a reputable shop will usually offer an equal or better level of dependability and durability than the EPA-compliant lean burn ECU settings of a near-stock warranty covered powertrain anyway.  Performance builds typically address the inherrent vulnerabilities of the stock setup by including crankshaft timken bearing conversions, installation of better oil pumps, valvetrain components, the elimination of cam chains, tensioners, better ECU mapping/AFRs, etc... .  I will retain the benefit of the warranty for any component, the stereo for example,  that is  not directly impacted by my modifications.

If you do not plan to include the stock powertrain vulnerabilities as part of your modification plan, the factory warranty should remain an important consideration for you.

Just my $.02.

I can understand your concern/dilemma, but I think a better question would be to ask how many have had a problem with their scooters after doing Stage 1 (pipes/AC/SERT or PC) conversion, how many have had problems after changing cams/pistons/headwork? I know there is always that one in a million (maybe less odds) that something could/would happen, but it would be interesting to see if there were failures, how they were dealt w/under warranty conditions.

I'll start off to say I had the Stage 1 (Rineharts/AC/SERT) put on mines in Oct.

I honestly don't think you'd have anything to worry about in terms of getting warranty work on the road if all you did was slip-on mufflers and the appropriate SERT mods to accomodate them an the lean A/F.

Does the ECM really log hours also? Ridiculous!

Hoist, I honestly have no idea if it does or not.  Only mentioned it because it would not be an unsurprising function if it did.  In fact can think of a couple of good reasons (from the mftr's perspective) that it might.  I know most modern four wheeled vehicles do.  So if Delphi components in the ignition system of my GM vehicle do it wouldn't surprise me at all if Delphi components in the bike did.

Can't say for certain that the Delphi ECM logs this type of data, but I thought I'd throw a screen shot at you from the SmartLink IV software for the T-Max so you can see what is possible:

As you say Jerry, without having the dealer's software in front of us we're only speculating.  But quite frankly I'd expect that it does log hours.  It's just such a common function on that type of equipment that I'd be terribly surprised were it not done.  It's just SOP anymore.

Or get a dealer that installs the SERT and will cover your ass if something goes wrong.

I spoke with my dealer here in the UK and he was quite happy to install the SERT and still validate any warranty claims I may have.

Think I'll get that in writing.

So has mine and that's the way I'm going. Still have to make the final decision on the pipes as I'll be ordering them this month. Don't think you'll get me to stop posting just because I know what ECM I'm using. 8-) thanks for everyone's help. Hoist!

Stop?  Screw that.  Now you just have to shift gears.  Either post more about messing with the ECM or about whatever you decided to do next!

Too late Don. Mike's already messing with me about not using the TMax, and a VA HD tech was very clear about HD Policy. So maybe I just might keep entertaining you with my ramblings about "to ECM or not to ECM" and other such nonsense in the meantime. Thanks for making this easy. And I still have six more weeks of this before it comes in.
