Dealers must love to change batteries under warranty. My bike was in the shop 9weeks of the summer for the first four years. One dealer changed my battery out 3 times one year so I brought them my battery tender.

charging system failure diagnose??
« Reply #17 on: June 06, 2014, 01:10:41 AM »

I had posted before about this problem. Just now getting to it. I wanted to check for myself what the problem could be. Wondering where to start? Battery light and engine light came on while riding. I took her home and shut her off. tried to start again and nothing. Rode fine on the way home. No lights dimming or any lack of power. Where should I be gin my search for the problem. I have bought a new battery. Should I go buy a regulator and replace that along with the battery, or can I pin point the problem easily and buy what i need. I know the stator could also be an issue, but it seems like the regulator is something I could do easily?? any suggestions would be helpful, Im terrible with electrical problems and reading volt meters. oh its a 2008 SERK

Why not seek out someone who is good with basic electrical diagnostics and have them run the simple tests that will tell you if your stator, voltage regulator, or battery are bad?  Throwing parts at a problem until you accidentally stumble on the real problem is a very poor way to do things, and it can cost a lot more than just paying someone to do it right the first time.  And the kicker is that many people have used that "replace parts until you accidently fix the problem" method and still not fixed the problem.

I know it's not always that easy to find a competent tech to do difficult diagnostics these days, but a Harley charging system isn't exactly high tech stuff, and it doesn't require special tools.

First thing I thought of when I read the highlighted above was some "Stealerships", but then you did say paying someone to do it right the first time so that would eliminate the "Stealerships". :D :D
