Taller bars for SERK
« on: May 22, 2014, 04:32:35 PM »

Seeking wisdom and advice for wire extensions and lines for taller handlebar set up for my 2008 FLHRse4. Being 6'4" I've always put Flanders mini apes on my bagger rides, however, this new to me CVO RK presents new challenges, with TBW and hydraulic clutch. I've got coming a Wild One Chubby 10" mini ape for this King. Seems I'm adding about four inches to the bar height and another two inches wider each side. So I'll apparently need six inches longer hydraulic clutch line and brake line, as well as wire extensions.
Anyone got any sources or part numbers for my needs? Any help or input would be appreciated, as always.
Thanks

Don't know if you'll need longer lines or wires, as I was able to change to 12" Wild One mini-apes on my SERGU and Springer w/o changing either.  Others will weigh in on that.

Magnum https://www.magnumshielding.com/ for lines, and NAMZ www.namzcustomcycleproducts.comfor wire extensions are good.

Yes Double, that was the case with my prior 2002 and 2007 RK's. Even the brake line worked with a bit of judicious straightening. Just had to cut the wiring connections loose from stays inside the nacelle to make things work. I just figure that many of you have been down this road before. A lot of new and easy to screw up stuff for me. I still miss points and condensors.  ;)
The scooter I recently picked up is fairly stock with just 16,000 on the clock. Just windscreen has been changed out. Was a chick's bike, been dealer babied and has all recalls addressed. Runs smooth...

I'm definitely interested in seeing this too. I had a dealership quote me $1400-$1500 to replace. That was including "9 hours of labor". They made it sound like it was brain surgery, I don't think the guy had a clue. That's typical I guess. I had a friend change out his bars on a 2013 Street Glide only thing that needed extending was the internal wires. His is not a CVO though, I'm not sure if that would matter.

Oddly enough I would believe that  dealer shop quote, at least for my '08 serk. Willing to bet dealer would replace EVERYTHING, with only wire extensions added. So one would have the bars of one's own flavor, as well as riser's to match the one inch handlebar mount center that aftermarket bars have (HD has 1 1/4"), new extended hydraulic clutch line and front brake line, which must go all the way back to the ABS control unit, not just to the fork tee. Probably have to pull the tank to get that brake line back there. A new TBW unit, as the original stock throttle had a connector that makes it tough to thread back through the handlebars. Oh yeah, threading all that wire is no fun either. Open up the nacelle, change out the connectors for bar wires and correctly add extensions and reset to connectors. Bunch it all up, bleed all the brakes, bleed the hydraulic clutch line, and clean all up.
So by that time you are into $600 in parts (dealer dollars), and yes, close to 9 hours shop time.
That's why I'll do this on my own. Not rocket science, just takes time. I really don't believe I'm just going to be able to slap bars on, like changing out a mirror. But.... we'll see. Stay tuned.

Finally got parts together and handlebars mounted. The Throttle By Wire sensor kit was backordered from the factory, but everything else was easily sourced and arrived quickly. Eventually got the TBW unit. Stock unit has a PIA connector inside handlebars. Gotta love MOFO engineers. Here's the list.

Harley -Davidson part number 32310-08 HDM sensor 1 1/4" bars $83.96
JP Cycle  part number 633-888 wire extension kit $40.99 (I found this kit lacking three wires, but not a big deal. The 14 included were color coded and invaluable. Solder like a surgeon though!
Wild Ones Chubby part number WO515 10" mini-ape $338.97 w/shipping. That included the riser shim kit so the 1" riser clamp area on the Wild One bars work on the 1 1/4" stock riser clamps.

The stock hydraulic clutch and brake lines are usable. For a taller or wider bar you'll need to source new lines. Might be possible to move the stock lines out of nacelle and get several more inches. I needed 8" for my new bars. Got that from plenty of slack in Nacelle. I used WD-40 for pull lube and all went well.  My labor was six hours, mostly the extensions and getting the connectors correct. Take pictures and notes. Factory manual helpful too.

So the project cost me under $500 and improved my rider position and the bike handling. What a difference.
