leaving cruise control switch on
« on: May 24, 2014, 03:26:31 AM »

I use cruise control all the time, and usually leave the dash CC switch on.  When I mentioned this at the local dealership today, the salesman said "the dash switch should only be on if I'm using the cruise control.  It will ruin the circuit if it's left on all the time".

I'm not sure why leaving the cruise control switch "on" would be a problem.  Any ideas, opinions, or facts about this?

there's an off switch?  never turn mine off either.  left it on on my last bike, had it for 4 years, no issues.  have left it on, on this bike, but only had it for a year so far.  with all the 'danger, don't do this or it'll cause global warming and nuclear annihilation' warnings in the owner's manual, you'd think if it had a detrimental effect there would be something about it in there, but there isn't.

thinking salesman is full of it.  as usual.

Salesmen (and sales ladies) say the darnedest things. I leave my cruise switch on always. But I do turn the ignition switch off when I'm not riding, lol.

No longer an option on the 14's.  No more dash switch for on/off.  You have to press in the inboard toggle switch on the left handlebar to turn it on...everytime you start the bike.  Not a fan of this new "feature" myself.  \

:confused5: I'm guessing you do most all of your riding on highways or interstate roads where using the cruise is practical.
I had cruise on my '09 SE Ultra and used it on occasion.  I now ride a new 2014 Street Glide Special and it has cruise also.

To activate it,  all ya gotta do is push the button in and then flip it down.  Since your "thumb" has to make that one move no matter what,  I'm not understanding any gripe as to the "extra" push of the same button just prior to that. :-\

This is one of those times they should be informed by being forced to parse their own ignorance.  Simply ask the guy what he means by "ruin the circuit" and follow it up by asking for an explanation as to how leaving the switch closed would accomplish this "ruin" effect.  When he can't explain either in any way that makes any sense then help the guy out a bit.

The guy is likely actually trying to be helpful.  Just passing on something he heard elsewhere, thinks is important, thinks might be beneficial to an owner, but doesn't have a clue what he's really talking about.  So he should be enlightened rather than embarrassed.  Though it would have been better if he'd just have known what he was talking about to begin with.

Yeah, my "HD BS sensor" started tingling right away after his lips started moving.  It reminded me of the sales people at the now defunct  Circuit City.  They seemed to hire the youngest, most inexperienced kids so they could pay them as little as possible.  It was frustrating when the customer knew more about the product than the salesman.

Look how well that worked for Circuit City.
