It's amazing what I learn on this site. Thanks, PinkE.  Next ride I go on, I'm looking for signs in farmyards for eggs for sale.

The Free Range eggs are hard to peel when you boil them because there so fresh and the membrane inside hasn't shrunk yet, to make them easier to peel, steam them for 20 minutes them plunge them into Ice water till cool, the shells will peel much easier.  Another egg fact...lol...You don't have to keep fresh eggs in the fridge, many people leave them in a basket on the counter for 6 weeks or more....I'm afraid to try this, I keep mine in the fridge. :nixweiss:

Rooster, you probably knew all these egg facts, right?  This would be a good subject to Ponder about at MV this year, I will bring some fresh eggs if we can figure out a way to cook them down there.

When I was in High School I learned to judge chickens and the first one I pulled out of the cage was a huge white Rooster. I grabbed him by the legs and pulled him out he tried to take flight with me holdin on as I was just a little guy. Wish I had pics to share y'all would have a good laugh. He was not happy. :huepfenlol2:

Don't worry, I am bringing a cooker or two and maybe even a couple of Pots and a frying pan.
All we will need is some bacon and grits.

PinkE,
You bring up some interesting points. I'm not sure I share your same concerns. Why would the Egg producers/farmers treat eggs in an unsafe manner? They feed the same eggs to their family... As far as nutrition goes, it's in the best interest of the farmers/owners of the animals to feed them in a way to promote health and productivity, low levels of nutrition don't equate to healthy productive animals. Over supplementation of the same nutrients can be costly so bird nutrition is managed very closely to maximize health and productivity. Animal welfare is a critical key to success when trying to produce high quality food. Unfortunatly for animal ag, the industry has taken some black eyes for a few very bad players. The anti animal ag people seem find the problems, exploite them, and even take part in the abuse, which makes me sick. I can agree eggs from free range hens will be different in make up, due to hen nutrition. I support a free enterprise market and get frustrated when one segment of food production throws mud at another to sell their product when birth products are safe. My concern about the niche market production systems is that the are not sustainable long term. With the world population increasing and the land base for ag decreasing, it's going to take new and current technology to raise more food to feed an ever growing world.
I'm confident in all food production systems, that they'll  produce wholesome food for my family. I chose to buy conventional produced products, due to long term sustainability, wholesomeness and cost.
As a person who works in animal ag everyday, I work hard to help my clients and family product safe, wholesome, products everyday. We support our customers in which ever practice fits their ability to be sustainable in food production.
Even though some of my clients are very large producers they are all family farms and are raising their families with the products that they grow. Some of these folks get the "factory farm" label which is unfortunate and undeserving, as it's such a derogatory term, in today's consumers' mind.
Let's all work together to feed the world, and make some money doing it. Whether we like it or not animal ag is a for profit business. It's how I support my family and Harley habit.

Supershooter, I'm not saying that a little bleach that absorbs thru the shell will hurt you, but washing off the bloom will allow other bacteria and germs that live in peoples fridges to enter the egg.  Commercial farms for eggs are a cruel place, just look it up online, I'm sure there are many family owned ones that are better than others, they call their hens Battery Hens, just look that up...All their chickens are disposed of after 1 year cause most all of their eggs are laid and they slow down, and they can't be bothered with a hen that doesn't produce an egg every day... Did you know a chicken is born with all the eggs it will lay in it's lifetime, tiny yolks, already in the ovary, when there gone, there gone, they don't make more each month.  Did you know most of them can't even walk because they never have moved more than an inch in those tiny cramped cages.  Just go buy an egg from a free range farm and crack it open next to a store bought egg...It speaks for itself, then taste the difference, then tell me there the same....There are no Antibiotic's in my Hens, I deworm with garlic...Do you want to talk Milk production, and what's in the milk you drink?  I have a little experience with that business too...Dairy Farming...?  Antibiotic's, Puss, Steroids...I'll raise my own organic stuff, yes, I drink store bought milk and buy store bought meat, I wish I had room to raise my own, but unfortunately I don't.  I'm doing a small organic garden this year, plus my chicken eggs.
