Ran out of gas despite the recall...
« on: May 27, 2014, 05:23:36 PM »

Went to the dealer last week for the recall of my Breakout...  Well, I dunno if they didn't do it right but I ran out of gas while i should have had 37 more km to ride!!!

With my Rocker C, when the count down hits zero, I still have at least 25 miles before running out of gas.

I must say I was a little pissed...   :soapbox:

so the countdown hit zero, but you didn't believe it, thought you could ride 25 miles more, and then ran out of gas?  and you're pissed that your gauge was accurate, unlike the one on your rocker?  am i reading this right?

Not exactly.

The fuel range indicator was showing 37 km when I ran out of gas.  I know that this is not accurate, but usually, you get some running time even after hitting zero.

Over the weekend mine showed '30 miles' left and then after 10 miles showed 'lo range' (IRCC) before I pulled into a gas station.

So it appears they either didn't do the recall properly, or the recall isn't a robust "fix".  I think it would be a good idea to let both the dealer and H-D know that their "fix" didn't fix your bike, and you impatiently await their response.  If you don't get a response, refer to the recall letter for the contact information for the NHTSA, or the Canadian equivalent.  They ask that people inform them if manufacturers or dealers do not live up to the requirements of the recall.

If there is any error in the system, it is supposed to be on the pessimistic side, not the optimistic side.  Harley got away with that kind of stuff for a long time on the older models, but somehow they have now found themselves on the safety defect radar (finally), thus the requirement to actually do this recall.  Now they just have to do it right.

Good advice.  I'll contact both the dealer and Deeley (Harley Canada)

BTW......I have a hard time believing you ever saw a zero on the "miles remaining" screen of the gauge.  Usually the low fuel light will come on at around 30-40 (miles), and will count down to about 10 (again, miles)....at a much more abrupt pace than the rate you are traveling.  Once it hits about 10, it jus switches to LOW......no count down from 10....unless HD did something drastically different with the Canadian models.  I will also say, that if you saw zero on the rocker, it's amazing that it went another 25.  If mine gets to 10 and switches to LOW.....there better be a gas station within eyeshot.....or I'm going to be pushing.

Dahsen mentioned that the range was 37 km = 23 miles. Mine has shown numbers as low as 15 and then switched to low, with no numbers. Before the recall I had to ride with the low on the display an additional 8 miles. So I must have been down to the last couple miles before I would have had to start pushing the bike!! I now fill up as soon as I'm down to the last bar.

Personally I usually don't look at the bar gauge that much, I just reset the B side of the trip odometer at every fill up and gas up again after 170 miles. Since mine gets between 200 and 220 miles per tank this pretty much eliminates running out.

Ok... This must be my 'French thinking' brain...

Rocker C story:
I was on an island with a single gas station on it (learned this that day).  Countdown went down to 13 km, then switched to low.  I was at least 25 MILES from the gas station and I managed to make it before having to push the bike.  Some gas left in the bike.

BREAKOUT:
Was riding on road with plenty of gas station on it...  Countdown was at around 50 km when I passed in front of the last gas station.  Said to myself, no problem Bro, next station is not that far...  Moments later, engine started having hick ups and died at 37.  Never saw LOW or zero on the BO..... And there was not 13 km between the 50 and the 37 indications, it dropped rapidly...

x2

I will do 250km of town / highway or 200km if riding in a manner that will draw the attention of Mr Plod. I'm still dumbfounded that people are relying on the distance to empty feature.

A mon avis tu as raison.

My reasoning for describing how my bike behaves is to point out the fact that I am in fact experiencing what you are expecting to see. Showing 37 km's and then running out of gas is not normal. You should take the bike back to the dealer.

I guess the other thing to consider here, is that the bike uses the current fuel gauge reading to determine the "distance to empty" reading on the digital display.  So, all it would take is for your float arm on your fuel gauge to be bent slightly (easy to do since they're usually pretty thin rods) and your bike would read more or less fuel than actual.  So if for whatever reason, the arm was tweaked just a hare during shipping to the factory, or perhaps during installation, the gauge could read a quarter tank....even though it is sitting at 1/8th....this will throw the countdown off.

Just to be safe I would be carrying one of those new fancy gas cans that fit in a saddle bag just for that feel safe thing. Hope you get it resolved. I know my answer is not a fix but it beats pushing.

After the fix, mine dies at 30 miles remaining. Irritating but now I know. It's happened several times. Not a complete shut down but stalls repeatedly.
