After the fix, mine dies at 30 miles remaining. Irritating but now I know. It's happened several times. Not a complete shut down but stalls repeatedly.

So obviously the "fix" isn't a real fix.  Since this is in fact a safety defect, you or anyone else with this problem definitely should not just accept this shoddy "fix" and go back to not knowing how much gas you really have left.  Contact the MoCo, let them know the recall "fix" didn't work, and let them know you expect them to fix it correctly.  Let the NHTSA know as well.

Now that we finally have Harley being held to the same recall standards all the other vehicle manufacturers have been held to for decades, I would hate to see the customers let them get away with a bogus response.  And btw, Rocketman69 makes an excellent point.  This may not be a simple software glitch, but in fact the same kind of mechanical glitch that has caused Harley gauges to be severely inaccurate for decades.  I have to believe Harley knows exactly what the real problem is, but passing off a simple (and cheap) download as the "fix" is much less expensive compared to removing and calibrating the actual gauge sending units.

I think youve hit the nail on the head Jerry. If enough people complain they will be forced to remedy the real issue.

never let it get below half a tank but had the fix done anyway. recently on a long ride I checked it out. The low fuel light came on and the range indicated 30 miles remaining. I filled up at Range=22 miles and there was about .8 gal left in the tank. That seems close enough for me. There was probably about 1 gal left in the tank when the light came on. The range I think was a little on the low side at 30 remaining but better be safe than sorry.

Being a older rider I have to wonder what you guys would have done in the o.d days before gas gauges when we had to go by our reserve. Gas gauges are a luxury to motorcycles today I never trust them, treat them as if they where politicians and you cannot go wrong.

IF the EFI bikes still had a reserve like the old carb bikes then the lousy fuel gauges from Harley might not be a big deal.  However, since EFI bikes DON'T have a reserve, it is incumbent upon Harley to provide an accurate gauge, or failing that provide a pessimistic gauge that has a built in "reserve" by showing empty before the tank is really empty.  Harley has all to often provided gauges that were just the opposite, reading over empty when the tank was dry and the engine stalled.  I've had two out of two that came that way from the factory.  In my case I took it upon myself to fix them when Harley chose to blow me off, but that should not be necessary.  The government has forced recalls in the automotive sector for this kind of fuel gauge error, and finally has included H-D in that requirement as well.   It really shows how little regard the MoCo has for it's customers when they still can't get it right even after supposedly performing a recall "fix".  I can't believe they are really that clueless and incompetent, but if they are then it clears up a lot of other questions about the many defects and poor engineering they've allowed to persist for years.

I also rode bikes with reserves for years and this was perfect...   Now imagine  yourself in those old days, running out of gas, switching to the reserve and......   Guess what, there is only one tea spoon in your reserve while there should be a gallon...  You would not complain ?  ;)

BTW, I called the dealer concerning my problem...  He asked me how much gas I used before running out of it.  'Hummmm... Don't remember, why?'  He answered very politely that HD riders usually know how far that can go and they don't look at the gauge...   Thank you for that answer!  And in two years when I sell the bike to someone else, I will tell him that the gas gauge does not work but he should not care because he is a Harley rider...

... And Yes, I would prefer a reserve....

I have been out of town a lot since the fuel recall was completed on my bike, so not a lot of refills done to figure things out.  After the recall was performed there seems to be less fuel in the tank at the time the light comes on.  Trying to figure it out, but I mainly go by the miles ridden since the last refill anyway.

I miss the days when I had a reserve, but I would not want to go back in time, too many other features I love on these bikes.

I filled up after about 2 miles after the low fuel light came on today and the bike took 4.3 gal.  Last time I rode about 5 miles after the low fuel light came on and it took about 4.5 gal.

I think the fix works if they load the program right.  Why do I say that, well when I took mine in for the 1,000 mile service they had some issues with the first time they tried to load the software.  The local tech ended up calling the tech at the Mothership and they installed over the internet.

Will keep monitoring on mine, but they might want to see about reloading the software fix.
