Overheat Normal or Not
« on: May 27, 2014, 08:43:30 PM »

Rode my bike today, temperatures at about 70 degrees.  As I went through town, at three stop lights, the engine sounded different, I believe a result of the back cylinder shutting down.  Does anyone think with temps of 70 degrees the engine would overheat?  I have changed the exhaust and had the bike dyno tuned.

Since I installed my Ultra Cool oil cooler, Baker plus 1 oil pan, K&P finned oil filter the bike reaches approx 270 to 280 degrees in stop and go on a 90 degree day and levels off. Never had the rear cylinder cut out since the mods.  ( its still set up to cut out though ) Normally the bike runs around 220 to 230.  The fans on the Ultra Cool come on at 295. Did that on the dyno. The guy could of had a few more fans for my liking.  Cheers.

The EITMS doesn't look at oil temperature or ambient air temperature on the air cooled models, so those items don't mean anything in this situation.  The only thing that activates the system is the cylinder head temperature as reported by the sensor located in the left rear of the front cylinder head.  And if the bike sits for any length of time idling, the system will kick in because there is no air flowing over the heads to cool them.

If this activity bothers you, I'd recommend installing cooling fans that blow on the heads rather than having the EITMS turned off.  Check out the many threads around here on the Wards fans; they seem to be very well regarded by those who have installed them.

Seems as if those fans should come on way before 295. :nixweiss: I rode several days all day just over 100 and mine never went over 255. My fans come on at 185 but then different kind than Ultra Cool.

Your bike is not overheating.  The cylinder cutoff (EITMS) is for your comfort and benefit only.  You can idle the bike all day in direct sunlight and it won't overheat.

Thanks for the comfort.  I never recognized my 96 engine doing this, so it's new to me.
I have a couple 12 volt computer fans, but I don't think they can look to cool mounted to my bike!  8)

The Wards Parts Werks fans are just the ticket for pushing air over the cylinder heads, maintaining airflow and thus managing the temps  :2vrolijk_21:

with the 2014 models, they have changed the eitms to now kick in if the ambient temp is over 80*

That's true on the water cooled bikes.  I believe the air cooled models are still triggered by the head temp.

i dont know if that is true or not, but this is from the 2014 street glide special owner's manual.  seems that maybe it is both?

Quote
When engine temperature reaches a predetermined point, the EITMS turns off the rear cylinder fuel injector. The rear cylinder becomes an "air pump" which works to cool the engine.

EITMS activates (rear cylinder turns off) when all of the following conditions are met:

NOTE:

EITMS does not activate within the first four minutes after starting the vehicle.
•Ambient temperature or engine temperature exceeds temperature threshold
•Throttle control is at idle
•Vehicle speed under 1 mph 2 km/h
•Engine speed under 1200 rpm

EITMS disables (rear cylinder begins firing again) if any one of the following occurs:
•Ambient temperature or engine temperature falls below temperature threshold
•Throttle control is above idle
•Vehicle speed exceeds 2 mph 3 km/h
•Engine speed exceeds 1350 rpm
•Clutch is released with vehicle in gear

When the engine is in EITMS operation, you may notice a difference in idle cadence. Additionally, there may be a unique exhaust odor. These are both considered to be normal conditions.

I think Jerry is right.  The ambient temp was no more than 72 degrees when mine shut down.

Mine kicks in much earlier than the 2010 Ultra ever did. Not sure of the exact temp.
