CVO Transmission noise
« on: May 28, 2014, 11:08:50 AM »

anyone have or heard of an issue with the 2014 CVO Clutch making a growling noise when the clutch lever is released and the trans in nuetral,  the bike had been driven for over 100 miles, I let it cool down 3-hrs, started the bike no noise

A "growl" might be an inner primary bearing, or an overly tight primary chain (the chain gets tighter as the engine and trans get hotter, thus the reason the ratcheting auto tensioner is a bad idea IMHO).

Yes, my 2012 does it too.

Of my last four Twin Cams, only this CVO does it.  My buddy had a 2013 FLH and it did it, my 2013 did not.  We went to the dealer together, I said I wanted my bike to rattle too, they were not amused.

Normal.

There is a TSB on the issue.   TSB M1304.

BIG TWIN NEUTRAL RATTLE

ALL 2007 AND LATER....TWIN CAM EQUIPPED. ..

Maybe it's just the choice of words, but to me a "growl" isn't the same as a "rattle".  The neutral rattle issue has been pawned off as normal by H-D, but it is a direct result of their sloppy tolerances in the Cruise Drive trans.  If still using motor oil in the trans, try using a real gear lube instead, 75w90 or 75w140.  Spectro, Redline, Amsoil, Mobil 1, etc.

Growl is a bad choice of words, rattle is more like it, It sounds like a car throw-out bearing that is going bad, but it only did it when it was hot, didnt do it three hrs later, I'm going to ride it to work tomorrow and see if I still hear it. I also use Redline trans oil. I just talked with the dealership, an they state that it's normal noise when its hot due to the plates lossening up, sounds like sxit to me...just sayin.I have 2000miles on it and never heard the noise before.

Sounds very similar to what I just went through with the auto chain adjuster. Wasn't engaging to the next level. Didn't make the noise till after it was warmed up and rode.

The growl or howl describes when my comp assembly went bad and also the primary bearing walked and I believe that primary bearing walk caused the comp assembly so with Jim's (hd dude) advice installed Baker primary bearing which was several years ago and so far haven't had to replace either yet knock on wood.

Took my MC to the dealer come to find out the noise was a bad compensator gear, FYI. They are replacing it

Update on tranny/primary noise...sooo.. The dealership had to replace the whole primary, compensator, clutch basket , chain and tensioner, stated they were wearing uneven and rubbing, got it back  road it 130 miles and the primary was rattling like everything was going to fall apart, nursed it 80 miles home, took it back to the dealer, chain tensioner was placed in the wrong SLOT so when the chain stretched it was Way Too lose. If you read all my other threads, elctronic, drive train, engine...I've had my share of crappy luck on this 2014 CVO limited, It's the Burgandy one... maybe it's the color. LOL

Don't forget to include in your bad luck the choice of dealership.  First, I find it peculiar they "had to replace the whole primary".  That sounds a lot like "we don't know what the heck we're doing, so let's just change all the parts".  And then they top it off by assembling the new parts incorrectly.

If you have other dealerships nearby, the next time you have a problem you might want to try one of them.

My thoughts exactly, the reason for the complete replacement was why changed a couple of parts, replace everything so its all new... i will be going somewhere else
