Zumo 590LM
« on: May 31, 2014, 07:42:20 AM »

Looking for a gps that I can get weather on and my choices are the Road Tech Zumo 665 or the new Garmin Zumo 590LM.  I know the 665 gets the weather provided by Sirius XM satellite radio service and the 590 uses an app on a smart phone via bluetooth for its weather.

What I don't know aboutweather on the 590 is if this is a subscription or a one time charge and how much in either case.  And when running the app on the phone does that use data time.  If so that could run up a cell phone bill pretty quickly I think.

One negative against the 590 is I don't think it is compatible to the moco navigation interface module so voice prompt turn directions would not come through the nim.  I doubt there will be a 'road tech' version of the 590 now that the moco has its own wonderful built in gps in its new infotainment system.   ;D

Maybe consider just the Garmin 665 vice the HD version and save some coin.  I've been running it for years and it seems to work good.

Understand WW but need the HD version to get voice promots thru the nim.  And the HD version has a two   year warranty vs just one year on the Garmin version.

Good point about the amount of data you would use with the phone app and the 590. I would think it would not be that much as I do not think the phone is constantly downloading data but instead downloads in bursts as needed. Using Pandora for 6 hours does not eat my data that much. My monthly data usage even running pandora for about a total of 30 hrs a month is only around 1.2 gigabits.

Another negative with the 590 is the cost. You can get a Harley branded 665 through a 20% discount dealer for about $630.00.

Another point is that you do not need the NIM unless you normally listen to the radio when riding. If you plan on listening to MP3 songs or XM radio via the GPS then the NIM becomes redundant as all audio including turn prompts will be handled by the GPS and come through the Auxiliary Input on the radio.

Thanks Jim for the info about data usage. I do like the nim so I can listen to music through other inputs - XM, iPod.  The 590 is not XM compatible.  Decisions, decisions.   :nixweiss:

I used a non-roadtech 660 on my CUSE4 with the Kennedy Cellset.  Worked great (better than the NIM) but is not cheap, of course.    I sold the 660 with my bike, and as there's no Cellset for the 2014 infotainment, and I want to buy a 590LM (more RAM so you can get the whole map on, tire monitoring, twisty routing, readable in sunlight - MUCH better than the 660) I've been trying to persuade Bissjim   :D to develop a module to make the built in NIM work with any GPS.

Only seen it in photos so far, Jerry.  Ready to buy, just humming and hahing because I like to listen to other audio sources and want it to interrupt.  I've played around with a 390LM and liked it, (though it has some serious shortcomings) and on paper the 590 looks better than it.  I was getting so frustrated with the 660 towards the end, so really want the 590.  But I want to have it interrupt!
