Effect of throttle on MPG
« on: June 01, 2014, 08:49:38 AM »

Over the last two weekends the wife and I took two nice 300 mile rides. One consisted of some hard riding and the other was just a nice cruising around ride.

Result:
** Gripin' and Ripin' It: 37.5 MPG
** Normal Cruisn': 47.3 MPG

Just thought you all would get a kick out of the 10 MPG difference based on riding styles.

GMR 577's, tru duals, 4" Rienharts and TTS.

Ten MPG drop is ok once and awhile as the smile factor is worth it sometimes. :2vrolijk_21:

Gosh, I'm lucky to get 33 mpg on my 2011 RG ultra CVO.  I don't hot rod, just easy driving. 2300 miles so far. Will it get better after some miles are put on it? It's bone stock. :(

Think I may try those cams this winter after warranty is over. Looks like a good combo and seemed to run great, better after a couple cold ones

If you're talking about GMR's 577 cam, I just tuned a set for a guy with an 08 SG punched out to a 107 with some head work from a local guy and RH TD's. The cams worked very well! Customer was ecstatic with the results. He's called several times talking about how well the bike runs.

Are you sure you're filling your tank up to the same level each time when checking mileage? That sounds awfully low on mileage for a stock bike/tune unless you are riding very aggressively or maybe you have a sumping issue or vacuum leak something else going on.

Normal riding I get 40 mpg on my 113.....on the Skyline Dr. and Blue Ridge Parkway I get 51 mps (40-45 mph with not may stops)....first time I did it...I thought my gauge was busted.

32 mpg when riding on the throttle :2vrolijk_21:

I expect to get fair mileage out of two cylinders. My Vett gets 26 mpg with the performance package an it has 8 cylinders. Just saying. That's why I think I should expect to see more than low 30 mpg. I'm almost 72 years old and did all my racing in my younger days from bikes to late model race cars.
I just feel something is a muck with mine. I also worked on bikes back in the carb days. I'm to ignorant on the new stuff. That's why I thought some one on the forum could enlighten on what I should look for in a stock motor. Pipes have been looking like a rich mix with soot in pipes. HD shop says that's the way they are. Well you've heard that before. Like I said I'm always solo, never two up, don't even have passenger pegs on the bike. So please give me something that makes sense. Thanks in advance.

Bad O2 sensor? Sumping?

Don't believe it's sumping, as I usually let it idle for half a minute or so sitting on it in upright position. How do I check o2 sensor other than take it to dealer?
Don't have a manual but I heard it's possible to read codes on the speed of meter? Seems to me the tank being on the bottom of transmission it would be hard to have an engine sumping? Unless you are talking about something else besides oil draining back from tank to crankcase?

Pretty good stuff, I think the best I ever got out of a tank was 37 and that's solo with a 96 motor. I about fell asleep. Best I can get now is 32 but they are fun, really fun miles is 26 mpg.
