I ordered one of these oil filter funnels from eglide goodies a few years ago, it works really well when changing the filter. Just slide it in place, pop a hole in the top of the filter with an awl or something similar, loosen 1/2 turn so the hole is on the bottom then pierce another hole in what is now the top so it drains most of the oil out of the filter before you completely loosen it. Either way you do it you will make at least a small mess but this tool will keep you from making a big mess and getting oil all over the oil cooler and the floor.

Thanks Tinspinner,

I bought the Harley version http://www.harley-davidson.com/store/oil-catcher-drain-oil-funnel of that tool and it work surprisingly well.

I usually just slide a 5/4 or 2x board under the jiffy stand so its near upright. Biggest two things I've noted is there are several plugs underneath you do not want to mess with so be sure which to unscrew and do not fill the crankcase completely until you start it as its really easy to get too much oil in the crankcase.  My Ultra Limited only takes about 3 quarts with filter change to get up to half a quart down on stick.  If youre going to make this a regular habit Grainger in Nashville sells 100 pack of orings for about $6.  Call ahead so they get them in stock.  Other places have bulk packs as well.  Messy part as stated above is the oil filter.

Hi TNCarters,

My bike took 3.5 quarts of oil to fill it. The biggest mess I had was from trans oil running across my EZ-UP center stand base and next time I'll pull that plug with the bike straight up, hopefully that'll take care of most of it. I only had a few drops from the filter but it really wasn't bad. The little catch tray really worked pretty well.

I drain my fluids with the bike straight up because I use a lift.  If you watch the techs at a MC shop, they seem to brace the bike straight up on a table lift and then drain.  I'm speculating that since the manual doesn't specify, it's not a big deal.

That's kind of what I thought Mark. But since the oil drain is at the front left I thought it might drain a little more on the jiffy stand and with the trans drain on the right side I thought it might drain better straight up. It wasn't a big deal changing the bike's position, I was just curious if there was an official "right way" to do it. All part of my anal personality I guess.  :nixweiss:

I hope you didn't fill it ALL the way to the FULL mark on the dipstick with new oil and a cold engine...once the engine and the oil get up to normal operating temperature you may find that you have overfilled the bike --- by about 1/3 to 1/2 quart.....Been there done that, had to buy a cheap vacuum bleeder (normally used for brake systems) to suck out the extra.....

I know the manual says 3.5 qts, but in this case don't believe everything you read. One of the first signs of overfill will be the faint smell of burning oil and then the excess will begin to find it's way out by dripping out of the air cleaner or covering the right side of the bike when it is more than a drip..

The manual said my engine takes 4 qts but recommended I add 3.5 and check it. Cold, I'm about 3/4 of the way up the hash marks, maybe 3/8" or so below the Full mark. Is that too full?

You should be OK at that level. Once the bike gets warmed up check your level and it will more than likely be right up to the full mark.

Joe,  Have not met but am just across the interstate from you between Brentwood and Nolensville.  I just bought a 100 pack of orings and will never do 33 oil changes.  If we ever meet up I'd be happy to split some of these with you.  I'm over at Bumpus or Specialty Arms frequently.  Do you ride with any local groups when not at a GTG; HOG, SCRC, Meetup or others?  A group of us are going up to Ashland City, Trace, Hwy 232 and Fat Daddy's this weekend if weather holds.

I cut a piece from the corner side a gallon plastic milk carton that has the slight edge. I made the width so it would slide under the filter (2 to 3 icnhes). The oil just flows along the platsic to the drain pan I use to catch the oil. I have used it every time I change the oil and it is free. I just copied what some of the ones you buy look like.

Hey Ron,

Thanks for the invite! It would be great to meet up and ride together some time but I can't this weekend.  I'm very active with the Murfreesboro HOG Chapter at Bumpus and we've got three rides planned, breakfast and dinner rides Saturday and a longer ride Sunday, then next weekend we're riding to Memphis. I also have a few friends I ride with but I'm always looking for more.

Let me know when you're going to be at Bumpus and I'll try to meet up with you. I'm only about 20 minutes from there. I'll gladly buy some of the o-rings you have.

Anybody know how to check the oil level in the primary case?  Both the owner's manual and the service manual caution against overfilling but they don't specify how to check it.

Look at what??  Observing some oil tells me nothing about the proper level unless it can be compared to a calibration of some sort.  Your answer is non-responsive.
