Tire Replacement Guidelines?
« on: June 02, 2014, 08:42:58 AM »

I have a 2010 Ultra with approx. 15000 miles on it.  Is there a general rule of thumb, regarding tread depth, when the tires should be replaced?

The tire manufacturer calls for a minimum 1/32" tread depth, and there are tread wear bars molded into the tire just like on a car tire.  While that might work if you only ride in dry conditions, I tend to be more conservative and recommend 1/16".  Things get more complicated these days with tires that have no center tread "rib" to make measurements easy, but just pick several points around the tire and measure the depth as close to the centerline of the tire as possible.

Theoretically before it looks like this.  Left on a 1,000 mile trip last Fri and the tire looked like it needed to be replaced soon but not right away.  In the last 200 miles, all Interstate, it went from getting bald to extremely dangerous.  It's a Metzeler ME880 with ~9K miles now for those interested.  Love the way it handles but not happy with the accelerated wear at the end of it's life.

Check those tires and replace them early rather than later.

I just replace on the early side because if I wait it ends up being to late and out on the road where the prices are much higher usually so I feel even though I change out early I save $$ and have more peace of mind.

I hear ya.  I have a 3k mile trip at the end of this month. Even though I think I can squeeze another 3k out of it I'd rather be safe. Putting one on in the next 2 weeks.

Must be riding style, I never got more than 11K out a Dunlop prior to switching.

That's not bad milage for a Metz, That's all i have  ran for the last several years and on 2 different bikes, The mileage is not all that great but the ride and the way they handle is, I will give up the long mileage for the handling anyday. :2vrolijk_21:

I liked it enough that I've got a new one arriving tomorrow, just in time to try and wear it out over the weekend!   ;D
