Dunlop American Elite vs Metzler ME 888
« on: June 02, 2014, 10:24:41 PM »

It is getting time to buy new tires for my 09 FLHTCUSE4. Bike came with Dunlops originally and I got 26000 miles out of them. Dealer talked me into Mitchlin Commander IIs as a replacement and I am only going to get 16000 miles out of them. I haven't been satisfied with them overall.  I am considering either the Dunlop American Elites or Metzler ME888 as a replacement. Has anyone had any experience with either of these tires? Any recomendations?

I liked the Metzeler 880 on my '09 CUSE, but I have never gotten over 13K on a rear......and that was a one time shot.

If you are concerned about tire wear and longevity, it appears you have your answer in the second sentence of your post.  If you got 26k miles on the rear of the stock Dunlop D407 (I've never heard of anyone else getting even close to that), and you're using that as your benchmark, you won't be satisfied with any other brand.  Of course the odds are good that you wouldn't get that kind of mileage out of another D407 either.  Or was that a typo?

I bought the Dunlop second generation American Elite tire the last time I needed tires. They have real good wet traction and are good on curves. I have 10,320 miles on them I am just at the half way point on wear. The front tire is doing perfect no cupping or uneven wear at all. The rear tire started cupping about 875 miles ago, it is not cupping near as bad as the original Dunlop's  did. But they still are cupping I am watching them to see if the cupping will start to progress at a faster rate with more miles.

Mileage on tires varies greatly based on how the bike is used.  Myself, most of my miles are achieved riding two up, pulling a fully loaded Bushtec, in the Rocky Mountains.  So I'm lucky to see 8k or 9k on a rear tire - anybody's tire.  Years ago, when most of my riding was local or town riding, I'd often see 15K or so on a rear tire.  Never 26K though...    ???

Seriously! I bought the bike in July of 2010 with a new set of Dunlop tires on it and 8423 miles. I rode the bike for 2 years, replacing the tires in July of 2012 at 34251 miles. Installed the Michelin's and now have 45375 miles on the bike. I have the receipts to prove. Why such high milage on the Dunlop's, I don't know. Always keep the tires inflated properly, don't lock up the brakes and don't peel out.

I got almost 19k out of my lat rear tire on the Ultra.  On the newer frame bikes some are getting mid 20s on the stock Dunlops.  Depends greatly on riding style as well as proper inflation.  On those same bikes the front tires are getting 30k+.

My persnal experience with Metzlers (on the RK)has not been good.  Inititially since they are softer they grip great.  Mine wore unevenly & as a result were swapped sooner than Dunlops. They had a bad run of tires from a plant in Brazil.  Of course some like them, but for me they were not acceptable.  Wish Michelin would make a tire for the newer HD dressers, have had good results from them in the past.

I only got 18k out of the rear and I'm at 27k on the stock front.  What is everyone with the 19" front using??  The only option I see of the Metz but that was a radial tire. ???

I wish I knew on the 19" front. I've never had one on long enough. I just had my 4th new front tire installed last week under warranty due to cracking in a year.

Good Lord!  I got a whopping 7,000 miles out of my last 18" 408 front and just shy of 10,000 miles out of my 407 rear.

Gonna try the American Elite front, but I don't think anything's going to last the way I ride.  If I get 4,000 miles out of the ME880s on the Night Train, I figure I'm doing well.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I have decided to go with the Dunlop American Elites. Ordered them and will get them installed in a couple of weeks.

It doesn't look like American Elite makes rear tires to fit the 14 Touring bikes Am I right?      Billy
