air filter caution
« on: June 03, 2014, 07:13:52 PM »

In regards to the post on my failed motor the actual cause was from a NUT in the K&N air filter for my custom intake. SO ANY one else that uses the K&N air filter please remove the NUT to prevent major DAMAGE. PLEASE TAKE OUT the NUT in the center of the filter. ONLY one person is allowed to get the dumb ass award on this site and this year it's me.

What nut are you talking about, and which K&N filter?  The only nut in the center I'm aware of is welded to the end plate and is used to attach the cover to the filter.  Removing that would tend to leave a big hole in the center of the end plate, making it impossible to mount the cover and leaving a huge leak path for unfiltered air.  Maybe you should post a photo.

Have three K&N filters within 15 feet of me here in the playroom shop.  No washer nor removable nut on any of them that could fall off the filter and be swallowed by the intake.  Still very curious what actually got eaten here or specifically where it came from.

Given the parts in question (and I hope this is wrong) the "washer off the air cleaner" or "nut off the air cleaner" stories the dealer is feeding telling you have some difficulty passing the sniff test.  I hope you're not getting jerked around.  Really do.  But can't say I'm confident.

If your damage is due to a "welded" nut coming off a K&N filter, I'd be getting pictures and contacting K&N!

The nut was not welded in place, just fitted or molded around the nut.

I would still contact K&N and see if they will take care of the bill due to there part failing. The worst they can do is tell you no.

The nut was not welded in place, just fitted or molded around the nut.

If the nut, whether it be welded or bonded with some kind of adhesive, came off what was holding the air cleaner cover on?  Granted, K&N would likely argue that it had been overtightened or in some other way abused, but even if it had been I'm just having trouble envisioning how the problem happened.

The nut was not welded in place, just fitted or molded around the nut.

In that case they either forgot to tack weld it, or they designed it to just be clinched by the metal plate to hold it in place until the center bolt for the cover was installed, at which point the nut would be held tight to the metal plate by the bolt.

What model K&N are you talking about? Is it the old round element that's been used for decades in the old SE air cleaners, or the Ventilator style that would be the air cleaner that was stock on your CUSE8, or  :nixweiss:.  Based on your comments so far, I'm guessing you didn't install a cover and therefore you didn't install a bolt in the center hole.

Which K&N filter are you referring to?  It would help to know the model.
