Sticky Ignition switch
« on: June 09, 2014, 10:22:26 PM »

Not sure if this is the right spot for this or not.

I was wondering if someone that has power locks could check something on their bike for me.

Put bike on stand.
lock ignition using the FOB
stand bike up
unlock ignition with FOB
Does your ignition switch turn freely or does it bind up?

Mine binds up but if I unlock the ignition BEFORE standing bike upright it always unlocks and moves freely.

Dealer tells me this is normal, I cannot find anything in the manual about this. I know it is not a huge deal since it always works perfect if you unlock the ignition prior to standing the bike upright.

I found it by accident one day when I got on the bike, forgot to unlock it so just reached in pocket and unlocked the bike while I was still holding the bike upright.  but the ignition bond up and was a bear to get it to turn.

Thanks

Its normal. When the bike is on the stand there is not much tension between the locking bolt and the frame, when you stand the bike up the forks move and you put tension on the locking bolt with the frame.

Think of it this way.  I'm sure you, like almost everyone on the planet, has moved the steering wheel on a car after the key was removed and the steering lock engaged.  Trying to insert the key and turn it becomes difficult unless you put pressure against the steering wheel to remove some of the force binding the locking pin.  The same thing is going on with the bike.  Next time it happens, just apply a little side force to the bars to free up the locking pin.

Mine wouldn't unlock the steering once while on the stand so I tried the key in the switch and the whole switch mechanism came out in my hand. Several others have had similar experiences.
