Pipes blue/gold after dyno tune
« on: June 15, 2014, 09:23:15 AM »

Had a dyno tune on my CVO Breakout. New Bassani pipes turned blue/gold. Dealer ordered new pipes and will fix no charge. Says it happened because they were cleaned too soon after the dyno tune. Can  the chrome be restored?

Cleaned too soon after dyno testing...did the dealer clean the pipes or did you?  So I guess the dealer is claiming the pipes turned blue because they were still hot when they were cleaned?

Some others may chime in, but my B.S. meter is going off.  BTW, I don't think I've ever seen a set of chromed headers that didn't turn blue near the clyinder.

Sounds like they got too hot on the dyno and maybe they need more fans to help keep them cool. I won't lie, I have blued pipes on my dyno before because I didn't have enough fans at the time. 2-1 pipes are the worst because the heat from both cylinders are collecting in one place. It's good they're stepping up and taking care of you on it. It sounds like it was probably their fault for not having enough air flow to the pipe to help keep it cool. Most pipes come with a disclaimer about bluing because it's a common issue that is heat related and no fault of the chrome shop that did the plating in most cases. If the chrome is flaking or discolored before they're ran, that's a different story.

You can "burn in" stains on a new set of chromed pipes if they aren't cleaned before getting them heated up the first time, but having pipes turn blue because someone cleaned them while they were hot is a large pile of BS.  It's sad that so many places rely on BS rather than just learn and then pass along the truth.  They overheated the pipes, either due to a mixture issue or more likely as INDEPENDENT_1 mentioned, not enough cooling air directed over the engine and pipes during the dyno runs.

Depressing to think I was lied to. The mufflers are have a golden hue and the top header has some bluing. Will this dyno tune still be ok when they install (the same Bassani) new pipes? I've attached the run.

Ask for a more detailed explanation from the dealer. Ask what they cleaned them with, how they were able to clean hot exhaust, etc.  Lastly, Why did they have to clean your exhaust system after the dyno?

They didn't try cleaning them. Just ordered a brand new Bassani exhaust system for me. Had them overnighted so I'll have them in a couple days. I just don't know for sure if they discolored due to heat or because they tried to clean them while hot, as they claim. Mufflers are gold/yellow. Pipes inside the heat shields are blued.

They are discolored due to heat.  Your tune, if a good one, should be fine with the new (replacement) pipes.

Your numbers are not bad for a "B" engine, which is counterbalanced, unlike the "A" engines in the touring frames.

The actual headers bluing (especially if they're not ceramic coated) is not uncommon but the heat shields discoloring is not ok.

If your talking the headers under the heat shields turning blue, that's pretty expected and normal.  The heat shields should not turn colors.

Could be the guy didn't lie to you....could be he's just uneducated and inexperienced is his chosen profession.  A fairly common failing in dealership employees...   :nixweiss:

Main problem was the mufflers turned gold/yellow. They say due to cleaning while hot.

Well that's a problem.  Your mufflers should not turn colors.  The tuner simply got the mufflers to hot while tuning your bike.  As stated previously, possibly because of not using sufficient cooling fans.  Regardless of why, they got them to hot while tuning.  Whoever told you it was because of cleaning is wrong - either a lie or just uninformed - but wrong either way...   :nixweiss:

OK thanks. The good news is they will replace the entire exhaust at no charge. Other than ruined pipes, anything else I should be concerned about. The bike is under a two year warranty and is only two months old.

In all likelihood, nothing...

Absolute worst case small possibility - overheated cylinders/rings could glaze the cylinders and damage the piston rings.  But don't lose sleep over this possibility.  It's probably fine..

I agree not likely but a quick bore scope and a leak down test would tell the tale.
