Freedom Cams
« on: December 07, 2006, 04:48:55 AM »

I am thinking about a gear driven cam conversion for my 06 SEUC and was wondering if anyone has a spec sheet on the Freedom FCC9 cams. I have the specs for the Zippers 575 and am looking to compare the two. I have already gone to an SE Air Cleaner, Rinehart True Duals, and a SERT, but am still looking for a bit more low end torque. Also, is there an advantage of one cam over the other (seems like FCC9s are posting higher dyno numbers).

If I remember right, freedom was pretty secretive about their specs and didn't want to publish anything.  Someone else here with more knowledge and memory than me will be along soon.
My motor is so smooth and quiet, I didn't want to change cams for fear of the clackety clack noise from higher lift cams, so I went with the 3.37 gearing.  Cheaper and makes the bike feel much better at lower rpms.

I don't know the specs, but I have the FCC13's in my 103 and I like them a lot.

As far as specs go Freedom does not publish them. They feel that they have spent hundreds of hours of R&D on these cams and do not want to "educate the competition". Brad and mark Yuill, the owners of Freedom Cycles, are old school drag racers. They come from the days of "what happens in the pit stays in the pit" Information just isn't shared. While I do not agree with them not publishing the specs I do respect that decision. Having said that I can tell you that if you want to get some info on the cams I suggest that you call and talk to Brad himself. He is a great guy to talk with and will answer your questions. FCC's number is 775-358-3500.

I have the FCC9 cams in my own bike and have installed several in other bikes as well. I have also installed the Redshift 575 cams from Zippers. They all work well. IMHO you will be very happy with either companies cams.

As far as noise goes there is slightly more noise with the gear drive setups on any cam. There is certainly not any clackity - clack noise with these products. The lift on either is not extreme as the stock 103 heads cannot handle lifts over about .580.( don't remember the exact number)

HD-Dude,

630 was max lift for stock setups.

Harley stated 550 but didnt tell us the truth :)  Zippers broke down 2 sets I sent them and they were 630 and upon request they went back out and double checked it for us.

With a new set of cams can I get away with then a simple adjustment/download on the Power Commander to take advantage of the new setup?

John,

Freedom provides a PC map with the Freedom pipe package, I would guess they would do the same with the cams.  However, you would be best served by having someone do a custom dyno tune, since there are significant differences between seemingly identical bikes.

You're right once again Jerry [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]. The map that came with my package from freedom was very rich in all but the 3-4k range and lean there. Here's a before and after tune of my with the map they provided

Sorry, still only 104HP and 116TQ! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] :D ;)

I don't remember if I asked you (if you told me I forgot) did he use the map I sent you as a base or did he start from scratch to build your map?

To be honest, I'm not real sure, Gary.  I provided it to him and he knew it was there, but based on the filename of the final run that was recorded, the bike got spun at least 43 times to arrive at the final tune.  That seems like a high number to me and would make me think he didn't use it, but then I'm not smart enough to know how many runs it would take to tune one from scratch, either.
