Strange vibration when leaning in a curve
« on: June 15, 2014, 11:31:56 PM »

I noticed a strange vibration that I feel when the bike is leaned to the right or left.  You will some times see riders kind if swaying back and forth in their lane just feeling the bike.  When I do that or lean into a curve it is sort of a buzzing feeling I feel in the highway pegs and somewhat in the bars.  As soon as I am upright it goes away.  I am not sure if it is coming from the front or back wheel.  My first thoughts front wheel bushings or flex in the swing arm making the drive belt teeth rub the side of the pulleys.  Anybody ever had this experience?

Which bike?  Miles?   Miles on your tires?  Tire pressure?  Possibly badly cupped tires.

I noticed this too on my father in laws bike Saturday,  when leaning into a turn you would get this little whizzing or buzzing noise.   very odd..

Run your hands around the edges of the tires feeling for raised edges or hollows.  You are describing the classic signs of cupped tires, a problem which seemed to get worse when Harley switched from the D402 tires to the current D407/D408 tires.  It will continue to get worse as the tire continues to wear abnormally.  Replace the affected tire(s) and religiously maintain proper air pressure (get a high quality accurate gauge and use it often).  And hope the new tires were made better than the old ones.

You need to include in your profile or in your posts what model and year bike you're talking about btw.  It helps immensely when people are trying to respond to requests for assistance.

I would suspect cupped tires or worn swing arm bushings.  Inspect your drive belt edges for wear - an indication of worn swing arm bushings...   :2vrolijk_21:

I have the same thing on my Breakout...  2000 miles o. Tires, pressure is good.  I'm almost pretty sure that it's from the front.  The vibration is not steady...  around twice per second.

Buzzzzz... buzzzzz... buzzzzzzzz.........

I'll check later if I can feel something on the tire...

I am riding a SESG 2012 with only 3900 miles on original tires. I have a feeling it is the front wheel bearing.    Do they use a needle bearings or a bushing type in the front hub?   I have seen needle bearings that will make a vibration when under thrusting or lateral pressure make this type of noise when showing signs of wear.  I purchased the bike with only 3100 miles on it about 4 weeks ago and listen to the stereo fairly loudly and there is some vibration I can feel in the handlebars and highway pegs from my music.  At first t thought it was normal and from the music,  last night turns off the music and it was still there. That is when I started to work on isolating the source.  I have had problems with cupping on my old bike ( Yamaha Roadstar) even though I watched the tire pressure very carefully.  I am a fairly heavy guy , 275 lbs, so I know that payload, and pressure are the keys to avoid cupping. When I would have cupping it was a lower freq. vibration than this is.  Currently I have 3900 miles on it, so for all practical purposes it is just getting broken in.

I had this on my '09 SERG before replacing my tires.  After replacing my tires with HD Dunlops as original, within 1k miles the buzzing leaning noise came back.  I cannot see any major cupping, definitely not like my high mileage tire had.  My bike's mileage is in the mid 13k range and I had new tires on at 11.7k miles.

I have the exact same thing on my 13 cvo ultra with 6 k miles on it. Perfect tire pressure with nitrogen in them. Was told it was the infireor tire Harley went to. Did it since it was new. Going to go with American elite when they are shot

Every bike I've  ever had does that including my 2014 Ltd.  It always starts at around 3k to 5k miles. I check tire pressures regularly. If you look at the rear tire from the side sometimes you can see it's not round and smooth. They look more jagged with high and low spots. Put new tires on and the sound / feeling stops.  Mine will do it in a straight line if I just barely tilt the bike. Doesn't matter right  or left it vibrates. I just learn to deal with it because I'm not buying a new tire every 5k miles.

Are the wheel bearings a needle bearing type or a bushing style on these bikes.

Another reason not to buy a newer bike. I'm sticking to old Dunlop tires as they are cheaper to. I know there are better tires but if you ride a lot you buy more tires so sticking with the old standard.
