I don't worry about fuel mileage until I'm at 1/4 tank in the middle of nowhere.

Don't usually let that happen, but: A couple of years back I was low on gas, and meant to fill up when I stopped to pick up a hydration vest at a dealer in MD.  It was 100 that day, and I guess I got distracted.  Got back on the highway, and 15 miles later I looked down and said Hotel Sierra.  Cut across 3 lanes of I95 to an exit, and put 6.1 gallons  :o  in at an Exxon station. Have the photo to prove it.

X2!

Been there, done that! Not a whole lot of fun!    :o

I don't completely get why you would spend $30+(maybe ++) on a upgraded version of a MC with a larger motor and then operate it "lightly" because of fuel economy to save under $5 on a 300 mile day (300 X 35MPG = 8.5 gallons, 300 X 40MPG = 7.5 gallons. $4 a gallon...).
I really am not trying to be argumentative and understand that "money doesn't grow on trees" as my father told me every day of my life growing up but if economy is important to you, why would you spend a Cr--load of additional money in the first place for a CVO??
because i can!!!!!!!

i do believe i was getting close to 50mpg on the 103 but this is not a scientific calculation, maybe a little exaggeration lol

Actually a whole lot of exaggeration, but that's not unusual in the world of bikes and cars.  A good figure for a 2005 SEEG in mixed riding (more highway than stop & go) would be low 40's at best.  I average a consistent 40-41 mpg.

If you fill your current 6 gallon tank when you reach the 1/4 mark on the gauge, that would equate to roughly 4.5 gallons of fuel assuming the gauge is accurate.  Only you know the real numbers of course, but if you get 200 miles on 4.5 gallons that works out to 44.4 mpg, and that's about what you should expect in mixed riding.  You could of course do better if you just ran 60 mph on the interstate, but not many can resist jacking the speed up.  Higher speeds will drastically reduce mpg, especially on a vehicle with all the aerodynamics of a sheet of plywood.

I wouldn't be concerned at all.  Just merely pointing out my experience of when I got the best mileage (by accident), which was riding on good back roads at relatively constant speeds of 55-65mph.  I would actually get close to 50mpg on my 103 under those conditions.  My normal mileage was 38-42, as I don't putt-putt around.

On my '11 SERGU with the 110, Fullsac pipes, and TTS map, the best I ever saw was 44-46.  Normal was, again, 38-42.  Except when I was riding in Maggie Valley with Brian and Pete, then it dropped to the low 30's...I can't imagine why   ::) ;)

SD,  Agree completely with your financial analysis and conclusion.  This doesn't apply to nascar; just want to provide a different perspective:  Mileage can get serious when riding two-up and pulling a trailer in those wide-open spaces of our Wild West.  Doing that, I've gotten as low as 30 mpg on my SERGU and had to hunt for a place to get gas in some of the one-horse towns out there, especially on a Sunday.

I ride with a buddy who has a 98 Kawasaki with a 4 gallon tank and gets bad mileage.  I never worry about running out of gas.

If you don't pay attention that can get you on a Sunday anywhere through the Bible Belt if you are running backroads with no direction in mind

Arnold's rule #2 on motorcycling....Never pass up a gas station in Montana/Wyoming/Idaho/Arizona/Utah

Rule #1?  Never follow to close to a livestock trailer

Mos def.  I've been through 3 or 4 towns in a row where the only station was closed.
