Lifters
« on: June 18, 2014, 08:56:31 PM »

So, I was talking to my Indy last week and mentioned that I wanted to change the lifters cams etc. on my 12 CVO ultra to S&S. He told me that they found out that they could buy them from a auto parts house for way less money than from S&S. They said that the lifters from a certain GM model were exactly the same lifters, buy for somewhere around $70. Any one know if this accurate?

Yes, the twin cam uses a GM based lifter.

At $10 a pop.  $70 seems like a rip off.

Do yourself a favor and put a quality lifter back in your bike made for a bike. I installed the comp 850-1 lifters at a cost of $67 and they will be replaced shortly with some GMR's. I'm having trouble with bleed down after a 30 min stop as well it's pretty loud on cold starts. My choices would be GMR's, Gatorman, then on to the more expensive S&S Premium lifters.

Perhaps your Indie misunderstood what you wanted, or somehow thinks he has the inside scoop on who makes the S&S lifters, but I think what he's talking about is that the stock lifters from H-D are in fact made by Delphi, who just happens to also make lifters for GM.  And yes, the same basic lifter is used in some GM engines.  That doesn't mean buying the GM version is going to accomplish what I believe you are trying to accomplish.

I assume you've been reading about all the lifter roller failures, especially in 2012 models, and are looking to replace the lifters as insurance against an early major failure.  Stick to your original request and tell him you want the S&S Premium lifters, made in the USA.  Saving less than $200 by buying the same stuff you already have instead is false economy IMHO.

Parts redistribution is alive and well. S&S lifters are made by them specifically for the HD application from what I am told. Delphi lifters and Morels are relabeled and are also offer premium versions of their parts when used as intended but that is a crap shoot. Spend the money and buy the best. Lifter failure usually carries collateral damage.

S&S, and if not S&S, then use S&S anyway. :)

Don, I used the SE tapered adjustable PR's.
24 TPI.
3 full turns plus 2 flats.
Very quite.
GMR 577's as well.
Only thing I hear is the darn TB clucking.

OK so cam change too. What other work? Added compression? Retune?
Personally I am looking for the bare minimum to change.

Fuel Moto head pipe/Crusher Mellows.
TTS with a starter map from Russel.
Been doing a few V Tuning sessions to dial it in closer.
Then a trip up north.
After that's done I'll just ride it.
The 577 is a good pick it your not going to open it up.
NO loss of bottom end torque.

I'll stop by one of these Saturdays.
