Instrument lights
« on: June 19, 2014, 10:45:14 AM »

My wife just bought a used 05 Electra Glide Screaming Eagle. We bought the bike from someone we know and was the original owner. We noticed the instrument gauges are not illuminated at night. The Tach and Speedometer or lit but not the other 4 gauges. when we asked our friend about it he said they have never lit up at night. He took the bike in with the same question when he first bought it and was told they don't light up. Seems kind of odd to me. Does anyone know if this is true or not.

I cannot speak to an 05 but I had an 04 and those gages lit up at night. Not very brightly but they did light up.

Yes, the small gauges are equipped with one small bulb per gauge, and while they aren't very bright they do indeed light up.  It sounds like your friend had another of the many "fine" dealerships that prefer to lie and blow folks off rather than investigate a complaint.

If your gauges don't light up at all, perhaps the folks who built the bike didn't bother to plug the bulbs into the gauges. :nixweiss:  If you decide to get this fixed, I'd suggest finding a higher output replacement bulb.  There are some threads around here detailing the choices others have made that increased the light output.

Aren't gauges being illuminated a DOT requirement?? Would think that would be a standard and the fact that a tech/dealership would say something like that, well.... (I should be surprised... but I'm not).

Replaced my originals with LEDs (SuperbriteLED.com - I think).  Much better than stock.  Plug and play.

Well the gauges definitely have a working light in them, but the bulb is covered by a little orange condom. I guess that is what gives the orange glow, and emits hardly any light at all.

Get the super brite bulbs in red.  They will light the sky.  Huge difference.  And only a few mins to install.   I did my 04.  Night and day difference.

Yup, SuperbrightLED.com  you can get different colors and bulbs with different amounts of LED'S and various illumination angles to increase the brightness.
