2008 CVO Ultra Issues?
« on: June 25, 2014, 04:15:25 AM »

I just purchased a 2008 CVO Ultra with 50K miles on her, I know very little history on the bike although I did get her from a HD dealer so I'm hopeful that they performed a good inspection on the bike. Can anyone give me any pros or cons on this model year for the Ultra, I would really appricate any advice.

Congratulations on the new bike!

Was the dealer you purchased it from also the original selling dealer?  If so they may be able to provide some of the service history for the bike if the previous owner had his work done there.
At 50k miles you might want to inspect the cam chest for the usual tensioner wear and REPLACE the lifters if you don't find evidence they were done previously. Also keep your ears open for the compensator to start acting up.
These issues are not limited to that year and if you use the site's search feature for those topics you'll find plenty of reading material.

Congrats on the new bike! I have an 07 that I have had relatively no issues with until recently. I am in the process of removing replacing the fuel pump and filter, but other than that, it's been real easy riding. I love my horse and will never get another one unless she is a newer CVO. There was a recall on some internal parts in the engine, but at 50k, but I don't think it would have made it this far without getting it looked at. There was also a recall in the shell assembly in the tank, but again, at 50k, this should have all been addressed by now. I would make an attempt to locate the original dealer to see what has and hasn't been done.

I also Have the 2008 CVO Ultra. Love mine, Only problem I ever had was the passenger foot board bolt broke and the board fell off with no passenger on it. Other than that trouble free.

I too have an 08 and absolutely love it.  I keep trying out a the new ones, and every time, I get back on mine and just love the way it rides.  And the best part...everything works.  You've got yourself a beautiful bike.  Ride it and have fun.

You can also contact your local H.D. dealer with the V.I.N. They will be able to access records in regards to the 0905 head campaign and the fuel shell recall and tell you if  and when they were done. I did this to find out if mine was done. (it was).

We opened it up this weekend, cranks is out by 0.030 and the cam plate bearing surface is shot. Been running out of true for probably 40k klm going by the history I was provided with it. They were having trouble with it and didn't work out why. So up for a major re-build. Expected that might be the case and had allowed for it. Will get a stock crank locally and a local rebuilder to true, weld and balance it. Then maybe deck the heads clean up and polich and a nice cam. Won't go radical as reliability is more import. The bigger motor will produce all the power I want from a HD.

Sorry to hear you have to have a rebuild. I too recently bought a FLHCUSE3 with 7k miles, now has 15k and no issues yet.(knock on wood). Hope you (and I ) have a lot of years with these bikes.

congrats I too have a 08 SE it is the 105 anniversary addition. The front rod bearing went at 21000 miles and when it went. Also the rear exhaust cam lifter went. Al repaired under extended warranty. I renewed the extended just incase. has 30,000 now and seems to have noise in the valve train that seems like its getting worse but will take it in soon while still under extended.

Don't know about your dealer, but our local $tealer does nothing to trade-ins; just washes 'em and rolls 'em out.
