Andrews 54 vs HD 255?
« on: June 25, 2014, 03:31:23 PM »

With a Fullsac DX and 1.75 cores does the Andrews 54 make a better power band than the stock 255? Any body with thoughts or experience? I am looking for a cool running, low to mid range, quiet, strong touring motor. Not going with heads or pistons on the new CVO limited.

That was my experience with 2" cores. The 54 pulls almost to red line.

You might want to read this older thread:   CVO 110 Andrews 54 dyno test! 120 LBS Torque! 102 HP!

The 255 is a "grunt"  /  low end cam.

The SE255 is a great stump pulling cam.

However, I switched to the Andrews 54H cams and can't more stoked!

X2 on Yellowbirds assessment.

Before my bike was totaled.  The only downside is the clickinjg thru the air cleaner from the throttle body.  Not really a downside but worth noting.

If you want the low end grunt and good mid range stay with the 255, the 54 will KILL your low end.....this is dyno proven.

Why not something more middle of the road between the 2 choices given?

I don't have either of these cams but my bike makes this noise as well,  I thought it was something wrong but im glad to read its normal.

Guess I'm going to find out. I'll hold on to the 255s for a while just in case. Really hard to believe a stock HD part is better than an after market one. :D :D

Just an FYI.... I bolted in a set of 54's with adjustable pushrods and noticed a big difference in power. The dyno run w/54's  showed 95.96 tq and 89.94 hp, compared to 114 tq and 96 hp w/ the 255's. Same dyno and dyno operator. I will say there was less valve train noise w/ the 54's. If you are going to use the 54's I believe you should change the head gaskets to raise the compression. I've tried a couple "bolt-in" cams and did not like them. I ended up going back to the 255's. For me (I ride 2-up) they perform better and run smoother than the straight bolt in cams. The only complaint I have is they are noisy in my opinion.

Too bad Crane's 300 is not offered in a higher lift version.
Maybe someone has already copied it, and is calling it their own.......?

This CVO rode in my door with stock 255s and left with 54 Andrews and .030 head gaskets.
Thats it! No other parts. Just a little tune up. I'm looking really hard, but I only see a power gain?
The same power gain as the last one I did and the one before that? Weird, these 54s just keep working for me?
Must be all those Briggs and Strattons I hopped up as a kid. Lol..
