Question about passing lamps
« on: June 25, 2014, 07:33:16 PM »

I have a friend that had a bad switch that controls the spot lamps on the lower fairing cap.   So I changed it out and all was good,,, for about a month maybe.   Now I got a call that ithey are out again.  And the light on the switch doesn't light up any longer either.   Would anyone know what could be going on herer?  He has the very bright white halogens in them.    Thanks.  Stuart.  :nixweiss:  his bike is a 2004 electraglide classic.     Not a cvo.  Thanks.

Are the bulbs good?
If so you got a broke wire or bad connection maybe even a short.
First id trace all the wires and visually inspect them and the terminals.

Stuart-

Like Muddypaws stated, if you have power to the switch, the switch is bad.  Make sure you have power to the switch-no switch light means no power or bad switch-lol..  Bob

Can a switch really go bad in a few weeks?   I just put it in and it was fine.    Strange.  I didn't look at it yet.  Maybe this weekend.   Thanks.

I had a buddy go thru something similar. He swapped his driving lights for some super bright high watt halogens. Switch burned out replaced the switch and sure enough the switch burned out again in short order.  I suggested he change the switch and swap back to old regular halogen lights and it's been months since he had a problem and the switch and lights are working fine. Those super bright lights draw more amps than standard lights and I suspect the switch can't handle the load, causing it to melt down and fail.

Most of the time high wattage bulbs use a switch to control a relay that handles the higher current of the lamp. Most switches on motorcycle have low amperage ratings. If you look at your wires on your switches on your handlebars you will see a 18 awg wire at best.

Makes sense to me. Those are the brightest blue- white bulbs I have ever been in fron of.  Almost looking like a fireball back there when we ride at night together. The headlight seems to work fine.  Most likely order up another switch and I have some old lights here we can try.   Thanks for the help you guys.    Stuart.
