Primary Oil
« on: June 27, 2014, 10:13:23 AM »

Owners of late model bikes, what are you using for primary fluid?, with the new compensators and the issues some have had.

Formula+ or a light viscosity GL4 gear oil. Not ATF not motor oil.

I run Shockproof "light" in the transmission. On purpose not a mistake. This is just a constant mesh transmission. No need to over think it or run molasses for oil either. If you are a believer in the Lucas oil auto parts store demo you will not prescribe to my philosophy I'm sure.

I change Primary every oil change and transmission at 10K

OK flame on!

The "Heavy" is still a 90 weight gear lube.  That word "heavy" seems to throw off a lot of people, since I hear and read comments all the time about it being "too thick".  The actual viscosity is what you need to look at, not the name of the product or the sales hype about it protecting like a 250 weight or some such drivel.

Harley recommends Formula +, which is approximately an 80 weight gear oil.  SYN 3 is a 50 weight motor oil, which is roughly equivalent to a 90 weight gear oil in terms of viscosity.  So obviously Harley expects us to use something in the 80 to 90 weight range (gear oil scale).  Shockproof Light is an 80 weight gear oil, so it's fine in a Cruise Drive trans.  So you won't get any bashing from me.

I personally run Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in my older model primary, but I don't know that I'd recommend it with the new and unimproved primary in the 2007 and later models.  It might be fine, but without real testing I'd hate to recommend it due to all the other problems that new style primary has.

Formula + in the Primary.  I don't like the way anything else feels with the clutch.

Aerated oil is what I have experienced with shockproof heavy.
The drain oil warm looks like a strawberry milkshake.
Good info jerry as always. I was aware of the viscosity perceived difference between motor oils an gear oil.
I am on the fence with my new 13 cvo in the primary for the reasons you cite. I may use mtl

lucas makes a 80 weight primary oil ( from info they sent me) and we have used it,.. in fact stock it as had several customers ask for it. It seems to work very well . I am not a lucas fan but this oil has worked very well. And has worked a bit better than + HD as far as holding power with the clutch.

While I always appreciate actual experience, it seems some have confused primary with trans lube. I'm fully aware of shear properties in a gear (transmission) application, but I'm looking for a lube compatible with the clutch plates AND the new style compensator. I assume Formula + is a Harley product. TIA

The sliding elements of the new compensator are the only thing in there that drive a requirement for a EP oil. If it wasn't for that a lot of other oils would work just fine even tractor hydraulic for cripes sake. The new comps have been a pain and have failed very regularly. HD finally seems to have a handle on them but the oil requirement and attention to detail there is still apparent.
Right, Formula+ is a HD product and seems to do fine along with the latest version of HD compensator which includes a drip oil system as well as a slinger built into the design.

i use rotella t 15w-40.  it is jaso rated for wet clutch usage, costs about $12 for a gallon bottle, which nets me about 3 primary changes.  i started using it a few years ago in my 2010, and have continued to use it when i got the 2013 cvo.  i have never had to have a compensator replaced, but that may just be luck on my part.  i only have about 7500 miles on my cvo, didn't get my usual mileage in this last winter.  i did have 40,000 on my 2010 when i traded her in.  i change my primary oil every 5k when i do the engine oil.  used to do a clutch adjustment at the same time, but with the hydraulic clutch, thats a moot point now.

B&M trick shift here.  Only synthetic some clutch manufactures recommend.
