No choices for right tire size and load rating
« on: July 05, 2014, 08:26:17 AM »

I recently bought a 2011 cvo FLTRUSE. It has the stock Dunlops on it. I have always preferred the Metzeler tires on my other Harleys and assumed that I could get the right tire size for this road glide. Looking on the Metzeler site they only have one rear tire that is the right size but it's load rating is 74 and HD recommends 80. That's a difference of 165 lbs.

Just wondering if any one else has experienced this with their tires and gone ahead with a load rating that is less than HD recommended and how that worked out?

I ride 2 up 95% of the time and usually have the bags full as we tend to do longer rides, so I am usually near the max amount of storage weight capacities

I looked at several other tire makers besides Metzeler, just to see what else is available, and the stock Dunlops are the ONLY ones that come in the right sizes. That is amazing to me that the tire mfrs would not have the right tires available as I am fairly sure that this model of bike is not the only one that has those load ratings

Thanks

You are stuck with the Dunlops from the dealer so far.

This subject has been beaten to death for several years now, basically since H-D went to the 18 inch rear wheels on the CVO SG and RG.  And four years later there is still nothing being offered by the other tire companies that will work with the stock rims and meet the load requirements.  This may be due to the fact that the number of potential customers for those particular tires isn't large enough to justify developing and producing that small volume.

If you really feel you have to switch brands, the only legit way I know of is to also switch rims to a size that accommodates tires that indeed meet the load rating requirements.  As for just winging it with a lower rated tire that wasn't designed to fit a 5.00" wide rim (that's the other oddball thing about the Dunlop/Harley scam), some folks bragged not long ago about doing so and tried to convince others it was a "fine" idea that must be OK since they and a friend or two did it and haven't had a failure (yet).  To me that is a really stupid way to look at things.  It's kind of like sticking your hand in a live electrical box, and since you didn't get electrocuted the first few times you did it then obviously it's OK to not only continue doing it yourself but also recommend that other people do it too.

Do yourself and your passenger a favor and ignore any attempts to convince you to do what you most certainly know is wrong.  Do not downgrade the tires.

I just put an American Elite on the front 18".  There are no options for the rear.

I just bought a Michelin Commander II 18" for the front, but haven't put it on yet.  Don't know that I saved any money, but everyone I know who has put on the CDR-II gets great mileage and loves the greatly improved traction, handling, and smoothness.  I'll report back in 15,000 to 18,000 miles   ;)

The AE was $139 delivered from Motorcycle Superstore and $47 to mount.  I believe the dealer price on a D408 is $239.

I've only got about 500 miles on it, but it seems great so far.

FWIW, my last 408 made it almost 7,200 miles.  I'm hoping the AE does much better.

I had 25k on my first front one. Then again, that was mostly highway miles.

That's crazy. I pulled my rear at 16k because it was getting close and I had a 4k trip coming up. Better safe then sorry.

I wish.  At 7,200 I had about 2/32" at the center of the tread, 1/2" off-center on either side and I could barely feel the tread.  The rear made it about 9,000.

I don't know what it is about the 18s, but I just can't get any sort of tread life out of them.

You guys that put different brands on the front- are these radials? If so, the rear factory Dunlop is bias ply, so I thought you aren't supposed to mix and match?

Also are these front tires the same load rating?

I checked it out and yeah, the American Elite is bias ply and has the 63H speed/load rating- direct replacement for the OEM front.

Best price I saw was $135.00 at M&M Cycles.
