750 mile weekend on the new CVO RK
« on: July 06, 2014, 08:00:36 PM »

Got the backrest mounted and we left Houston Friday morning early on our maiden voyage for the Texas Hill Country. Bellville, LaGrange, Austin, Wimberly, Lakeway, Marble Falls, Burnet, Luckenback and back: 725 miles in 3 days.  The new bike performed flawlessly with me, sweetie and both bags full of gear.  There's more air turbulence around the windshield than I would have expected...it could stand another inch on top I think, and tends to vibrate quite a bit on mid and low gear deceleration. As has been noted by others, the seat is lacking in touring comfort but I think I can have new foam shaped and installed by a local upholsterer and resolve that easy enough. Handling, braking and acceleration are excellent, and I haven't even started modifying it. The brakes are unbelievable, I cannot imagine what happens when you really bear down on them but its good that sweetie has good dental insurance.  Unlike my '96 Fat Boy, which would "hunt" grooves in the road and wander around in traffic air turbulence, this beast cuts a path like a locomotive on rails and feels far more surefooted. We pounded 290 Eastbound this early morning at 85-95, no sweat.  Can't wait to hit the road again.

I did a 600 mile trip with the "ol' lady" on back in two days and she was not happy with the passenger seat, at ALL.  Looks like I will be shopping for a new 2-up touring seat when she wants to join!  I got a tad sore, but nothing more than I did on the 2010 stock seat I had on my old bike.  The overall improved comfort and reach for me on the '14 was a HUGE improvement from a driver standpoint.

That is one good looking piece!!

Of course I might be a little predudice.

Glad your windshield shakes too, was beginning to think there might be something wrong with mine. Mine seems to shake worse as the fuel tank empties, of course that could be because my heavy frame has the seat squished down to the frame rails after a whie. ;D

Enjoy your sickle!

My windscreen doesn't shake at all. For the passenger seat, I bought a small AirHawk pad, for the other half, all is good now. I haven't had an issue with the seat, but have only done 450 miles in a day

My windshield did not shake either but it s***ed on long drives. Replaced it with regular Road King windshield, changed the bars and now could be riding all day long at 80+mph...
Looks great too...

On my 13 CVO King, 635 mile is the most I have done in a day.  Bike has been to Key West FL, and the Apostle Islands in WI, and never on a trailer.
