Rear tire noise ONLY when leaning to the left
« on: July 07, 2014, 09:36:31 AM »

I believe my rear tire is starting to cup with only 7000 miles but the noise is only when I'm in a turn to the left. In a turn to the right it is still quiet. I am anal about tire pressure etc on bike so I feel this is not caused from under or over inflated tire pressure. Any ideas what could have or is causing this? My last bike I had just over 18000 miles on it before I got any tire noise. It was a 2009 ultra classic so it had the similar Dunlap tires on it.

Pretty standard. No need to worry.

Follow the lead of UPS and only make right turns.   (Sorry for the lame humor, for some reason I couldn't resist.)

It's hard to say why one side might be more worn or cupped or noisy than the other.  Alignment is one possibility I suppose.  A tire that was built slightly off kilter might be another.

GRC....could it be I only run oval tracks?? That was good, I will try to make more right turns to try to even the tire evened out. Your alignment thought is very good...thanks for the joke and imput. Well appreciated.

Are the roads Heavily crowned in your area? That might make the left side of the tires wear a little faster. Note I said a little faster.....can you visually see any evidence of tire cupping?

Maybe just lean right all the time to even the wear.

Mine makes more noise when leaning to the right. Had the bearings and alignment checked and it's all good.......got 10K on it now so a new tire will probably fix it.

Phato1 & fired00d...roads around here are not crowned to any great degree and both sides of the tire tread feel about the same. My old bike 09 ultra, I had just over 18000 miles on it before the rear tire started to make noise and it was on both sides with tread depth above 3/32's. I'll take it to the dealer later this week, but I'm sure  I'll be told it's "normal".

I had similar noise experiences.

I always thought it was an issue with my adjustable shocks not performing up to par.

I'll be curious if there is a change with a new rear tire

Just a thought... not even really related to a possible tire defect.  But, while I never noticed any noise when it happened... my patch/link to the electronic locks on my left saddle bag must have come loose and the wiring got into the wheel/tire at some point and it chewed the crap out of that little wire.

If it's come unplugged, you may be hearing the plastic rubbing on the sidewall?  Before it's totally shredded?

Ok...just got bike back from dealership...wow, am I impressed...with 7978 miles they replaced rear tire at NO COST!! Said tire was starting to cup, no reason given to me for cupping, so they replaced it under factory warranty. Kudos to the dealership for taking care of the customer beyond what they are responsible for...as we all know tires are covered by the manufacturer, Dunlop in this situation. Car dealerships wipe their hands of any kind of problem with tires. Happy camper here!

on my 12 my tire starting cupping around 7,000 miles. I heard and felt it especially during a slow turn in a parking lot or something like that. Took it to Reimans and complained about a noise. They simply said your tire is cupped. End of story, no offer to replace or anything.

I said that seems rather premature and they said they all do that, it is normal. Being a nice guy like an idiot I never pressed the issue.
