I'm running Woods Directional lifters which have performed well but they're not any quieter than stock.

Anybody using AMS?
I believe these are the Johnson/hylift. I know a shop that uses them and swears by them. They used to have a contract with Harley in the early 2000's.

That's odd.

if you have S&S lifters, and their noisy (and this was the only change),theres a very good chance their adjusted wrong.we use S&S lifters on just about every build (unless the customer brings in something else),never had any noise issue`s at all

I have at least one that sounds like an old lifter at 50k miles.  I've adjusted to differing lengths several times, and called tech support.

I may have a piece of dirt in it, I don't know.  It's ok when cold, but when heat soaked, one will rattle a bit on deceleration.

I've never had a quiet top end on my 110. I just assumed it wasn't possible...

I have Wood Directional Roller Lifters and they are as quiet as stock lifters. Most important factor is follow instruction how to adjust correct preload to lifters. Wood lifters have be adjust different preload than HD lifters. This is reason in many case when people are complaning that wood lifters are noisy. On this matter stock pushrods cannot used and always have to use adjustable pushrods.

http://www.woodcarbs.com/Directional_Roller_Lifter_INSTRUCTIONS.pdf

Example: If you have Fuel Moto adjustable pushrods 32 teeth= 0.31 travel .
- With HD lifters have to adjust 3 turns and 2 flat. (  this is stated in Fuel Moto pushrods instructions, but there is not mentioned that is only valid in HD lifters)
- With Wood lifters have to adjust 4 turns

I installed S&S lifters this spring I have 3,450 miles on them and they are rattling already also. If bike sets for more than one day when I start the engine they all rattle real bad for around 2 minutes. I installed them at .147 preload. At the same time I installed the Axtell oil by-pass kit so the by-pass oil was not returned back to the oil pump pick-up. When I start the engine when hot only one lifter will rattle for around 1 minute. They all rattle as bad as stock lifters at 2300 to 3000 rpm. Next time I think I will try GMR lifters???

Woods suggest .120-.130 deep and IIRC total travel is .180.   I don't see how this would make the open valve lifter be noisy after sitting over night?

I have had good luck with S&S, GMR, and 850's.  I have a customer that brings me a tune about once a month.  Mild stage 2's, and 3's.  He runs Federals Chevy lifter's.  He doesn't have any problems.

Check the clearance between the anti rotation pin and the lifter flat. Shim it if needed. Many are safe but some will last longer.

Shim it how?

If there is excessive clearance between the anti rotation pin and the lifter, measure the lifter across the flats and compare it to the other three.  If you have a short dimension on the lifter, replace it.  If the lifter is properly sized and you have excessive clearance, then the issue is the case machining.  If so, replace the anti rotation pin with an oversized pin.  You can obtain various size ground round stock from places like McMaster Carr.  Odds are, there are vendors out there that sell oversize pins also.

But it's fairly unlikely your lifter noise at start up is from clearance between the pin and a lifter.
