Oil Change, Interesting results
« on: July 09, 2014, 03:39:12 PM »

Interesting....

Been running Amsoil V-Twin (MCV 20-50) in engine and Primary, Severe Gear 75-110 in transmission for about 18k miles on the 2011 CVO Ultra.  One thing I did not like was the smell of the trans oil spilling into case and burning -- bad smell.

For kicks, switched to Red-Line 20-50, Red-line Transmission oil and Red-line Primary Case oil....

Well.... easy to find Neutral same as Amsoil, shifts easier going up....than Amsoil(?), but harder going down.... than Amsoil(?).  No issue with clutch and at this time, no smell from trans.

It certainly seems that the heat from the motor is notably higher?  This is odd for me, but on several rides, it is absolutely hotter!

Anyone shed light on this?

i don't know about where you are, but here the temps up to last week were in the high 80s.  this week, the temps have been in the high 90s.  i notice that my bike is running noticeably hotter as well, but i didn't change my oil.

Paws.... Not saying its a problem.... Use it in my Sons bike.... No issues. Thought I'd give it a try....

Maybe I'm just over sensing.... Trying to find a difference

That would be my guess.

Unless you do some instrumented testing comparing measured oil temps (compensated for ambient temps), as opposed to one of those "feels like" deals, you really can't make a valid comparison.  People can fool themselves quite easily, especially if they go into this sort of thing with any preconceived ideas.

As for the nasty odor of the trans fluid, I'm not exactly understanding why the Amsoil was dripping on the hot case.  Sounds like a leak or an overfilled trans pushing lube out of the vent tube.  Take it from a guy who has tried several brands over the years including Redline; all of them smell terrible.  The smell actually makes me nauseous, so I do my best to avoid taking a big whiff when changing fluids.
