How to protect my FLHXSE2 in back of pickup
« on: July 10, 2014, 09:26:43 PM »

Hey guys, myself and my honey are heading from Ottawa to Newfoundland at the end of the month and I was hoping for some advice on protecting my baby in the back of my pickup from all the bugs. I have a Triple D lift for the pickup and have used it once and when I got to our destination it was covered with bugs. Not nice!  Riding is not an option on this trip but at least I'll have her there with me.
Has anyone used a cover while trailering in open? I'm afraid the constant buffering of the material will scratch the crap out of the paint.
Perhaps some sort of wind blocker placed in the stake pockets of the bed that would protect the naked bike from flying debris?
Any advice based on past experience would be greatly appreciated.

Shrink wrap it.

Here is a picture of my Limited in the back of my truck, towed by my RV.  The bike is completely protected by a Pro-Tech "SKNZ" Travel Cocoon.  The cover is a tight stretch fit and made to fit a specific model bike.  There is no flapping of material that would otherwise mar the paint.  The inside is lined with velour so only soft material touches the bike.  There are button holes that pass the soft-ties that hold the bike and the cover is secured to the bike with elastic straps that pass underneath.  This has got to be the perfect bike cover.  It cost $235.  See http://www.skn-it.com/ .

I thought of shrink wrapping too.  However, don't use a regular cover...it will flap your paint silly.

I don't mean for this to sound snarky, but bikes get dirty when you ride them.  No different than being in the back of a pickup.  I cart mine around in the back of my truck from time to time, and I do the same thing I do when I ride someplace.....I pull out a spray bottle of cleaner and wipe the fairing down.

No snarkyness taken! We will be travelling at night along the coast and with all the bugs I hate to even drive the truck there! As we all know it's a royal pain in the but trying to get all the bugs out of everywhere on our glorious machines.

Bugs normally come off when I ride in rain.

You can tent it :confused5:
Build a tent frame or box frame in the truck box. You can use or 2x4. and fix a tarp to the frame, strap down the front and back of the frame/tent/box on the out side of the tarp to the truck box. Your bike sits in the tent/box tarp free from all your concerns.

If you don't have the means to cut the lumber just take the width, height, length of the inside of the box to your lumber hardware they will cut it to length and angles get attachment plates and screws. Job done low cost

I picked up this deflector for $200 bucks, I think it will do the trick.
Thanks for the responses.
